Performance AND Good Looks

Interesting tidbit from William Pensom in 1930:

"I say breed for good looks as well as performance; it can be done. The rolling tendency, in my opinion, is too well transmitted to give cause for anxiety for spoiling by introducing good looks as well…..I feared I might spoil the performance of the offspring by trying to breed beauty, but my opinion has altered. It is just as easy to combine good looks with performance as it is to breed for performance only………..I should mention that I have had marvelously good results from every point by careful inbreeding, and I am convinced that, as in any livestock, inbreeding in Rollers is the way to success. I have proved it both with performance and good looks….”

Yeah well,I hope he was correct as I have a father/daughter mating going on right now,not by choice but we'll see how it works out.I can't see how it can hurt,I'm sure it has been happenning in the wild since evolution or creation whichever one may beleive in.

Hey Kel,If you're working with Husbands or Fehrholz you're working with a highly inbred strain to start with.I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Kel I have a father daughter mating going on since last year. I have gotten some great performers out of them but I also have had three rolldowns out of fourteen birds. The good out weighs the bad in this instance but I will break them up soon and remate them otherwise. Mine are a buff to buff so they are a little more inbred than yours will be though.

I wouldnt hesitate to do it again with any of my birds though as I am a firm believer in line breeding.

The cоck is a big beautiful black and the hen is a small yellow, her Mom was a dun so I'll probably get lots more duns out of the pairing.I got one recessive red almost a brown from the original pair so hope I get some more of that colour.

If you don't have some rolldowns you won't have many deep rollers and will in time end up with mere tumblers.. that's my rant for the day.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on that one Alan. I have been hunting the edge for some time now. I think I am there now emoticon emoticon I will breed birds off this cross back to birds from my Hundred foot hen.
