Re: Fostering for a Newbie
You won't have to try different breeds, Jac's are a family of BR's, these just happened to be super good parents. They weren't what I really wanted as far as performance in the air, but they have sure done a good job raising as fosters for me.
I have 3 strains of OR's and one of them is far and away better at parenting than the other two. I can't say if this is strain typical or just the birds I have?

Re: Fostering for a Newbie
klorinth...to answer what you asked me earlier. I just use the pairs that I am breeding to raise their own youngsters. It may take alittle more time but,I can still get the amount of young that I want, safely. I have less problems this way. Like I mentioned eariler, the timing of the fosters laying their eggs in conjunction with your breeders is sometimes difficult to do. The timing is a very important part. Plus trying to find the right fosters to use can be a problem. Their are many many breeds that could probably do the job. I have presently 4 different breeds of birds that Iam breeding from now. I have Orientals,
Fireballs,my Ruby line. Plus my white birds(homers). And I let them all raise their own young. I myself find it too bothersome to use "fosters" Hope this helps explain things better for you.

Re: Fostering for a Newbie
It can be difficult to have space for everybody when you have more than a couple breeds or bloodlines. When I just had my BRs and white homers I only had 3 breeder pairs of BRs and 6 pair of BR fosters and the 4 pair of white homers breeding.I could get 18 BRs from the 3 breeder pairs in a month so that made a decent sized kit.Now I have 7 breeder pairs of BRs but no room for fosters so only get 14 per round.I like to use the fostering method if I can, later this summer all my BR breeders will turn into OR fosters to try and spread this breed around the continent some more.

Re: Fostering for a Newbie
Thanks guys.
All of your responses have helped. Has made me lean toward not using fosters until I have been able to get well established first. Once I am set up and doing well I might come back to it if I need more YB's fast. Until then it is probably not necessary for me alone.
Thanks again.
