Wooden Eggs

How many of you guys use these eggs? I have never used them. Why would you use them and what purpose do they serve? If you don't want the pair to have anymore eggs, then why wouldn't you just separate them?

Re: Wooden Eggs

They're good when you are using fosters if you want the foster pair to be laying again at a certain date you can take the real eggs out and toss them so they don't develop and put wood ones in under the pair, then when you want them to lay again 10-14 days later to be ready for your breeder pair, pull the wooden eggs and, that way you aren't aborting a live fetus when you toss the real eggs.I don't like to toss an egg if it is half developed into a youngster unless it is absolutely neccesary.

Re: Wooden Eggs

If you have one or more dogs, there is no reason to toss ANY eggs at any time, for any reason. Eggs are very good for dogs. And the shells of the eggs are so thin, that I just hand it to my dogs, like you would a biscuit or a bone. They'll gobble them down so fast and be looking for more. I don't believe in wasting anything, w/o a good reason.

It is nigh on to impossible to break an egg sucking dog from sucking eggs! I don't want to get that habit started!

Re: Wooden Eggs

You can also use a wooden egg to exchange with the first egg laid and then replace it again with the real egg once the second egg is laid. The first egg is brought into the house till the second egg is laid and then the two eggs hatch at the same time.

You can also use wooden eggs to let a pair sit if you don't want them laying right away, for whatever reason. One reason is so the hen don't lay too many eggs, if you aren't breeding from her at the present time. Another reason is to time all the hens to lay at the same time to fill your kit box with squeekers of the very same age. Another use is to let single hens sit on wooden eggs so they don't lay a lot of eggs when you aren't breeding them. There's lots of other reasons too.

I believe they are a good tool to have around.

Hey Roy.How about an egg eating chicken? That is something hard to stop and I tried everything on some chooks I had a while back.Even filling eggs with super hot ground up habanero peppers didn't stop it.

If you have a snake problem you can use the wooden eggs to get rid of it. Many times the snake will come in the loft and eat the pigeon eggs and babies. Place wooden eggs in the nest boxes and the snake will eat them and die.

Re: Wooden Eggs

Hummm….., interesting… You mean a snake can’t smell the difference between a real egg (that may or may not be warm) and a piece of painted wood (that may or may not be warm)??? emoticon Not to mention, you’ll need to keep a good supply of wooden eggs around, as they’ll be leaving w/ the snakes. emoticon Of course I guess you could go out and look for dead snakes, cut them open and get your egg back…… But then again…, have you ever smelled the contents of a snakes stomach ?? emoticon You’d better have a VERY strong constitution, or you’ll up yours….. emoticon

How’s about it Snake Doctor…., whasss-up with this idea?? emoticon
