Re: Wooden Eggs I don't know if a snake can smell or not but they will swallow wooden eggs, ceramic eggs, plastic or glass. A BIG, Gray Rat snake last year kept raiding my Seabrite bantam nests. I could never catch him at it. The last straw was his taking 6 Seabrite chicks and killed the hen, swallowed her up to her shoulders then backed her out. I had some wooden (Fools eggs) so I put a couple in each nest. I found the snake later, from the smell in my barn. I put it on top of a big Fire Ant bed, when the ants finished their work the snake had a total of 4 wooden eggs inside.
Back in the day we had glass eggs that looked like they were made out of glass like light bulbs. The thought was a snake would swallow them like they do an egg then the snake would wrap around a fence post, tree etc. and constrict to break an egg, the glass would break and kill the snake. Yankee Mike has some pictures on his site of a rabbit that was partially digested bay an Eastern Rattlesnake I think. And you are right, if you have a weak stomach don't attempt to examine the stomach contents of any snake.
