GRIT

What do you use for grit? Where do you get it? I have been using granite grit that I got from a BR friend. But, I am out and am looking for something easier.

Re: GRIT

Oyster shell has worked for me for the last forty years without any problems. I just dump some in the feed pan or have a free choice can in the pen with pinholes in the bottom in case of rain. I have mixed it with the feed but I feed so many different ways (single pens, open loft, kit boxes) that it is easier to just go around and give it to them as needed.

I am a big believer in grit. I take every kind of grit I can find and mix it all together in equal amounts and put it in the bird's feed. That includes Oyster Shell, Red Pigeon Grit, standard Pink Pigeon Grit and Bird Grit (made for caged birds).

I believe domesticated Pigeons lack a lot of minerals they would naturally pick up if they were living in the wild. Have you ever noticed when you let some birds out they immediately go to picking through the dirt? I believe that's because they are lacking minerals.

I also allow mine free choice cattle mineral which I buy by the ton. It has the consistency of sand and they like it.

I use National grey grit in a seperate feeder and I keep a mineral pik pot in with my birds most of the time. The birds love them and they're only about 2-3 bucks each. Nick

Re: GRIT

I have mixed sand, granite grit, and oyster shell together in the past. But, I ran out of the granite grit. So, when I was at the pet store, I bought a can of grit for parrots. It was high calcium grit. The birds went nuts over it. They acted like a dog who had never had a bone. It was amazing. That made me wonder if I (they) had been missing something.

Where do you all get the grit or oyster shells you use? I have been thinking about taking a bucket to a river and getting some river sand.

I wonder if the one horse in your town is given a salt block. Just food for thought.

That is why I give them cattle mineral. It is called 12-12. 12% calcium, 12% phosphorous, and a host of other minerals. They will it it like pigs until they get enough and then only as they need it.
