Re: Immune System
I have never thought vaccinating for poxs is a good idea as if your birds are healthy and they get exposed to pox they will get a mild case and it readily goes away having no harm to the bird except it will never get it again which sounds good to me.
I have been handling birds for our Go For The Gold futurity Race [http://goforthegoldrace.com/] and recieve birds from all over the country for the race. I have built my futurity loft abour 100 feet from my main loft and it is down wind as every year you do get some birds that carry adeno virus or pmv. What I do is give them a shot for pmv and sal-back when I receive them. They go into a holding pen for a week then into the race loft.I have probiotics in the water with vetisulid vitamins 24/7 I also add two table spoons per gallon of apple cider vinager with mothers. The mothers is very important as it has some of the heavy residue left in it and has not been homogenized this adds acid to the water and kills most bacteria. Some of the Vitamin products now are adding the acid to there products for this reason. Seems that even if a bird comes down sick and I remove it the other birds don't come down with what most call young bird sickness. I have had birds posted and most of the time it is adeno/pmv. And believe me if you have not had an out break of one of these Virus's feel lucky and you DON'T want one. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Re: Immune System
If you just let them outside to play like kids have done for 10,000 years they will naturally get enough dirt from all sources. It's these hot-bed babies that are so sanitary their immune systems are defunct.

Re: Immune System
Samir and all.
Researchers at Arizona State university who found that certain clays killed several forms of pathogenic bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aurens (MRAS),penicillin-resistant S. aureus (PRSA) and pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) You probably recognize MRSA and E coli. and the list goes on. leprosy, tuberculosis, Buruli ulcers
You can buy clay powder and mix it with juice or water. Clay is very effective at removing a long list of contaminants- along with destroying most pathogens.
What is clay: it is a wide range of trace minerals, which is what we are made of. I know most of you guys are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. So Alan spit that dirt out! You can buy it on line. I am sure most of you guys ate your fair share when you were kids, but not me!

Re: Immune System
quote: So, the ultimate question is this: What is the absolute necessary level of medication in pigeon care? Of course, this is a very complex question, and veterinarians have to study hard for many years to gain sufficient knowledge and experience to be able to answer this question. There is no general magic formula that works equally well for everyone. The circumstances might be profoundly different in Canada than in Florida. But there are general rules and principles that every fancier could and SHOULD learn and understand because these principles remain the same under all circumstances. If you know these principles and correctly apply them to your local circumstances, you will be a WINNER.
Two thumbs up for this article in "Newsletter"
A good balance to the woo-doo methods.
