HELP!

Looking for some input/thoughts on the following, I had one of my homer breeders die over night. At feeding time last evening all was fine, he was flying around and feeding his young, no signs of any problems. Yet this AM I go to feed my birds and he was dead on the floor, no signs of any injury, weight good and even his droppings where good.

With no outward signs of ill health/ injury and recent physical activity being very normal, as you describe. Then I would suggest that, birds can have.., heart attacks. It is quite common in finches. You have my condolences….. emoticon

Re: HELP!

Heart attack, never would have thought that, but it would make sense. Have never had anything like happen and it is kinda bothersome. All other breeders are just fine. Thanks

If you still have the bird, you might do an autopsy and see if you can find anything unusual. Or have you already done that?? When I have a bird (young or adult) that I have doubts about. I’ll open them up from just below the lower beak, all the way down to the tail. Break/ cut the breast bone, lay ribcage open like a book and (w/ good lighting) have a good look around.
After you have examined each organ, from the throat (and inside the mouth) down to the tail and find nothing unusual. emoticon Then that’s about all I know of, that you can do, short of taking it to a Vet. emoticon

Re: HELP!

A little over a year ago, I had a young bird, in the air, rolling well just helicopter down, dead. A friend works for the University of Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic and
Investigational Laboratory, near here performed an autopsy, necropsy actually and found that the bird had experienced a myocardial infarction, heart attack.
