What's your choice????
Lately, I've been giving alot of thought about a feeding dilima. Why do we have so many different things (grains)to feed your pigeons?? If pigeons can survive on 1 or 2 grains.... What happened to the "old simple" way of just giving the a good pigeon mix? I read about so many different ingredients. How they feed wheat, milo, peas, pellets and other grains and in what proportions.. What makes it so difficult and confussing to get your birds to just "FLY". Why is, what and how much you feed your bird the deciding factor on "how good they fly"??
Especially because of how much feed cost these days.

Re: What's your choice????
I have been wondering the same sort of thing. I ran out of the feed I have been using last week. The location of the feed mill makes it a pain to travel to and my truck battery died so I have been putting it off. I picked up a bag of scratch grains from the pet store and have been feeding lots of greens from the garden, peas, and seeds from various flowers around my house. My pigeons seem to like the change and I haven't noticed any difference in their performance.
It is a pain to gather all the stuff. I'll go this weekend and get more feed. But, I suspect that the birds would do just as well on what I have been giving them this week.

Re: What's your choice????
I don't know the answer, but a few weeks ago Steve Roth came by and watched my OR's fly. He recommended that I feed straight wheat, feed wheat is all that I have access to. After a few days of straight wheat the performance did pick up and the birds got up higher and stayed up longer? I had been mixing wheat, milo, safflower, black oil sunflower, millet and peas. Again the answer is I don't know??????? but I'd like to hear some more ideas!

Re: What's your choice????
Millet is like rocket fuel if you feed to much of it to Birminghams, don't know about the ORs,never tried it on 'em.I think the reason we feed our birds such speciallty feeds is the same reason we ourselves go out and eat steak and seafood at the Keg n Cleaver on friday night.Spoiled ****less.Really,,think about it.How many different grains at one time does a bird usually have available to it in the wild?
The old Greek gentleman I bought my Donek pigeons from told me all he ever feeds his birds is wheat and maize.

Re: What's your choice????
You may have a point there Kelly, I have been watching the dove around here, (season opens Saturday) last week there were hundreds on a watermelon field that had been bush-hogged, this week they have moved to a corn field that was burned off, but as soon a folks start to turn peanuts and after that harvesting sunflowers they will be on them, so I expect it would be the same with wild pigeons. The constant with the dove are water and gravel. No matter what they are feeding on, I can find them at a water hole or gravel pit. I'm still feeding wheat at Steve recommended, I wonder if they will go flat after a while of straight and if a feed change to straight milo or millet will kick them back into performance?

Re: What's your choice????
I have some late hatches flying right now.I feed all my birds regular pigeon mix with some corn(molting)and sun flower seeds all the time this year, once a day.Flying birds go to fly , come back in about 20 - 25 min(hungry) feed them 1/3 of their poryion wait a bit and fly them again. This time they fly about 45 min perform a loot and go higher.

Re: What's your choice????
I think that you will find that each grain have more of some nutrient and less that others same can be said for fiber. Birds need all of these yes some have fed only one grain but often these same birds have also been allowed to range and pick up other grains. I do not think that you can keep birds or any other animal for that matter on one grain or feed stuff.
The main diet that I feed my racers is 1/3 turkey grower pellets 1/3 whole corn & 1/3 wheat. I add a small amount of mixed grain about 2% of the diet. In fact that is the main diet for all of my birds. In the winter I add 15% hulless barley to the mix
This is my method I am sure that others will feel different but I know that it is a balanced diet and it works for me in the harsh climate that I call home.
