Preventative meds and/or PMV vaccination.
A couple things I'm curious about;
1)Of the folks on here who use 4 in 1 preventative meds,do you administer it during the moult or after?My idea on this is to give it after the moult because they have finished going through that stressful period and are ready then for another jolt to the system in the form of these meds.
2)How many vaccinate their birds for PMV(paromyxovirus) on a regular basis?
Any response would be appreciated.

Re: Preventative meds and/or PMV vaccination.
Hi,
I vaccinate for PMV mainly because my birds(Parlor Rollers) end up being exposed to other birds when they are in the showhalls before competitons.Also,there are "commies" floating around that my neighbor lady feeds.I have heard how bad it could be if you ended up with it in your loft so better safe then sorry.
As far as preventative meds I haven't used any so if I have a bird that I can identify what it has my brother-in -law is a small animal vet and alot of the meds used for dogs and cats work for pigeons.I just have to know the dosages.
I do put Primalac in their water after reading quite a bit about it and hearing others opinions on it.

Re: Preventative meds and/or PMV vaccination.
I don't believe in using a lot of preventative meds, especially shotgun type antibiotics. I believe you can do more harm than good. Antibiotics kill off the good along with the bad bacteria and after the treatment the birds are left almost sterile and open to attacks from dangerous bacteria.
I believe in doing the opposite and doing it often. By the opposite I mean prevention by keeping them pumped full of good guy bacteria i.e. probiotics. Theory is these will keep the bad strains from proliferating and keep an acid environment in the gut of the bird, which is hostile to bacterial infections.
I give my birds probiotics every other day.
Canker is the number one disease of Pigeons. That being fact, another thing I do is try and give all my squeekers at weaning and old birds before breeding season a Metronidazole pill. They say it will kill the Trichomoniasis that almost all pigeons carry. 80% of all adult pigeons carry it without showing signs of disease. When the adult pigeon is stressed, however, the organisms may multiply profusely. Metronidazole prevents this by killing them in the carrier stage.
My source for Metronidazole is Fish Zole, 250 mg tablets, broken in half and given to the birds orally. It's cheap and very efficient.
I also believe in PMV and Paratyphoid vaccinations (Sal Bac), though I rarely do it anymore. If you show, race or buy a lot of pigeons you most certainly should do it.

Re: Preventative meds and/or PMV vaccination.
Thanks for the input.I appreciate what you're saying about the 4 in one use vs only probiotics.Any birds that have come into my loft the last couple years have had PMV vac so I feel safe in that way but there are some feral birds hanging around so I'm a little concerned about them passing PMV to my birds.A freind of mine up island just culled his whole flock of BRs due to a PMV outbreak in his birds(and he has been diagnosed with enphysema)and he figures it may be from a Racer he had given away and it had returned after many months.Soon after the return of this one bird,his rollers got sick.
