Flying Young birds Good morning all. Gentlemen I have a question. Do you train FOR in the same manner as you would train B/R?? I mean do you have to play with the feed to get them to perform? I understand about the lazy birds, ones that land too soon. My main concern is the feeding. Thoughts Iam trying to get a handle on now, before I create even BIGGER problems later on down the road.
Re: Flying Young birds Paul you can play with the feed and increase frequency but it is not necessary as in Birms. They will fly longer and play harder if fed well. I feed mine what they will eat in five or ten minutes but sometimes have to cut back if they dont trap right away. I have YO-YO fed grown birds and had good results also. I have never fed mine down to the amounts given Birms to get performance even when Yo-Yo feeding. They just dont need to be forced to roll. They do it because they enjoy it. Never brag about how good they are going to do when someone comes to watch them fly. That might be the day they decide to do nothing. They are very capable of making you look foolish. But in short the answer to your question is no. The only thing you have to do is control the amount to adjust to the fly time you wish to have and have them trap in quickly if you wish. I always want mine to trap within a minute or two. I always have at least one more kit to fly. I have got my young Ferholt birds to strong today they flew an hour and a half. I will cut them back a little to get them to around forty five minutes. I have six kits of young birds to fly right now so I dont want long fly times.
Re: Flying Young birds Thanks Sippi....The main reason I asked was, I would like to have one or two choices of feed for them. Instead of several choices with the birms. I can definately deal with making adjustments in the amounts of feed. Sometines it just gets TOO overwheleming dealing with all the certain amounts of feed and which seed to feed and how much to feed....LOL. Iam trying to keep it as simple as I can. Good luck today.
Re: Flying Young birds Put up my one and only white bird today with the kit and he made a few rounds and then came back down to the kit box roof. I was pleased. every thing trapped in except for him and the last two Tuffies I added to the kit the same day. The young birds were just enjoying the fun and sun. Suddenly my old adversary the resident cooper male ( the smart one that played ring around the pigeon with me ) decided today would be a good day for pigeon. I just caught a glimpse out of my right eye of him in full stoop. No doubt set on having white squab not under glass. I jumped up and waved my hat at him and turned him about fifty feet out. The squeaks didnt even know they almost became lunch. I set up too close to the timber today. Make note to self, dont do that with squeaks.
Re: Flying Young birds sippi,
Kelly Birds UPDATE;
I released the nestmates i got from Alan today just after flying 3 kits of birms that scouted out the area for me.All was clear for takeoff.
The Kellys looked absolutely beautiful and acted like they been released before.The yellow grizzle was a little hesitant to come out at first but joined its nestmate in a flight around the yard.Looked like they enjoyed touch and go's as they flew around the yard and landed on the loft several times.They spent 20 minutes doing this[seemed like 2 hours] until i decided it was time to clean out my britches.I was a nurvous wreck so i shook the feed can and whistled and they trapped like it was an everyday occurence.This to me is a special event as im sure you remember your first release of FOR'S?
I guess im doing everything by the book[forum] and i will continue with updates on their progress as you wished.
later,
Re: Flying Young birds I got my fourth young bird up today even with a little rain going thru.
My older Dunn hen is starting to roll all the time even coming down to the board she performs so much that she is tired out in about 20 minutes. Is this good or bad? She still flys high with the others and does some long rolls and other antics but most of the time they are just 5 footers.
Re: Flying Young birds Bob I dont know what makes some tire like that. I have a young blue bar that will land way before the kit and will always be hassling like a dog. It just takes wing time to build these up to the kit. I make him/her stay up a little longer each time so it doesnt become a habit. As long as it is hassling when it lands I know it has tried. This blue is way too frequent. It has a black bar nest mate that is just now coming into roll and is pretty frequent also but has built its stamina up before coming into roll so it doesnt tire as easily.
Re: Flying Young birds Hi Sippi this hen can and does fly longer than 20 minutes some days but she rolls so many times I would say she rolls every minute or so except on the way up to maybe 300 to 400 feet than she start performing. Some days they will sky out and when this happens they usely fly for over an hour and when they come into view she will perform all the way down to the loft.
