Re: Flying Young birds

Gustov shrunk last night so no rain bands today just wind. I put up all my OR kits at once since they hadnt flown much lately. The wind was a steady twenty and gusting to thirty. The OR's loved it they were diving like doneks and lots of tumbling. I just let them do thier thing and they trapped in after about twenty five minutes. It was good and cool today and they really enjoyed flying. Mostly I needed that. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I had a strange occurance happen today. I was flying my kit of whites. I have two white squeaks that havent started to fly yet. They were sitting on the loft trying thier wings and exploring the roof when they just slowly lifted of spiraling straight up. One had never flown further than I can toss him and the other had flown only a couple of minutes around the loft. They continued to rise slowly seeming to enjoy the experience until they got above the timber, about a hundred feet. They took off to the west to the kit. One formed up with the kit and flew like a champ. The other headed for the coast straight west. I hope he writes when he gets to Mexico. emoticon emoticon emoticon It was the one that had never flown. This was at 1:30 this afternoon and he hadnt come back at dark. I have had fly aways before but never a squeak on his first time on the wing that was born and raised here. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I've lost a lot of older young birds that way. They don't have control of their wings yet and don't know how to land. They take off upwards like a slow tornado and get up so high and can't figure out what to do next and the next thing you know they are flying in big circles and are gone. Maybe it's nature's way of spreading the gene pool.
