BTW... in the summer, in the desert it's best to fly the birds early in the mornings. From 5-9 AM it's just beautiful here.

Right now I am just training these young birds, and do so a few hours before dusk so they won't be out all day. Once they start flying and are trap trained, I'll switch over to early mornings.

Well, I went out this morning at 10 AM and the door to the kit box was wide open and birds all over the place. The male German Shepherd was out there all night and morning with them and didn't harm any, thank God.

All the birds are accounted for and went in around 2 PM. I have no idea how that box door got open. I must not have closed it good enough last night. The birds learn fast where the water is in 110 degree heat. Yep, we have a forecast of 110 for today and tomorrow. BTW... it's so hot here the birds need to sit on the eggs to keep them cool.

Re: Training Notebook

Let them out yesterday afternoon and they are getting bolder. They made 3 or 4 attempts at flying and didn't have the nerve to go over 30 feet in the air and then came back down again. But later on they all took off as if something spooked them and they were all over the sky in a confusing mess. They were sure flying good for having their wings taped. They all made it back and came in before dusk but one bird. It's still MIA this morning.

I have a Deroy and a Sprinkle in the settling cage. I'll add them to the box today.

Nothing much to report. I have been letting them out the same way the last few days. One of the new birds I added went out for the first time and made some wild flights around the neighborhood but he made it back OK. I am hoping the tape will start falling off soon. These guys need to get into the air.

Re: Training Notebook

A member just wrote me a PM and asked if I tape both wings or just one. I tape both wings and just the first three primary flights. The reason I do both is so they will have a balanced flying ability.

This method need not be applied to very young squeekers. It's mainly for older birds where there's a danger of them getting lost because of an over-fly from not being properly homed and having their wings so strong they can't control themselves. I've lost many birds because of this. There's not a problem with very young squeekers because they can't fly very good anyway.

Also, this method is very dangerous during Hawk season because the birds flight is pretty much crippled. However, they can really scoot when they need to.

The tape only needs to be applied for no more than 7 outings. If it's left on too long their's a danger of them developing lazy habits. I've already left the tape on these guys too long.

posticon Re: Training Notebook

Hi Alan,

I just wanted to report my training progress with these birds. All four birds are flying as high as the hawks fly maybe even higher, when the hawks gets close to them. As soon as they're up, they would break into pairs. The pair with white sprinkles are the once that fly the highest, these pair would fly for 1 to 2 hours every time there let out,and when coming down, that's where I see them tailride, and roll like the WW2 plane. It was awesome and surprising to see. The other pair with bronze color and pearl eye c o c k, are the once that fly lower most of the time. I have mentioned on another thread that the bronze color bird did a tail ride from about 100 to 75 ft.all the way down to the roof, my uncle's and cousin's was amazed. I,ve been seeing lots of tail ride, followed by short elesie spin, and tumble. These pair are mastering the move quicker and quicker. Question? Have you ever flown these birds there, these last pair I'm describing. The reason I ask is they have abit more tricks into their bag and I'm getting surprise every week. As far as your training goes, they will be flying in no time just like my birds. They just need some time to see the sourroundings. Good luck!

Re: Training Notebook

I did not fly the actual birds you bought, they were just squeekers almost out of the nest

Re: Training Notebook

Alan,

I take back what I said about the bronze pair flying low. They too fly as high as the other pair, I flew all four for 4 days and I guess they caught up with the other pair and started getting better to kit. Damn, and I was hoping you made a mistake by giving me a pair of Husbands emoticon. Since then, they been flying out of sight and can barely see them from way up there. My neck is soar from looking up with these birds even with binocs. The only thing to do now is to experiment what mix seeds that will make them fly low. If you know any, please let me know. It's hard to keep your head up all the time, just to see some of the new combo moves their doing.
