Well, they went way up today for the first time. It was in 100 degree heat and they flew pretty high and routed out a bit for about 20 minutes and most came back.. I hope all came back.

Re: Training Notebook

I let them out a couple hours before dusk and chased them up this time and while they were going up a Coopers Hawk came out of no where and made a low swipe at the birds, they they really took off and many of them went way up to pin dot size. After they came back down the Hawk was waiting and made two more swipes at them, then I chased him away and they all came back before dusk safe and sound.

They sure were aware of his presence. He didn't come close to getting one.

I think the presence of so many birds is what draws the Hawks like a lure. I believe smaller kits is the way to go during hawk season. There's no way he could catch one of these one on one, it's in the confusion of a lot of birds taking off or landing that they are vulnerable.

I have been berated by the naysayers saying small kits is why hawks dont get my birds. That may be true but they will chase a small kit just as fast as a large kit. I have noticed that during the migration that they break apart the kits and then chase the out birds. One is as small as I can get my kits. emoticon emoticon emoticon . Had my resident coopers male sitting watching mine fly today. He only chases squeaks.

I agree with that! There's a lot more to it than small kits. I am just saying that small kits don't attract the BOP as much as a large kit. If small kits were the answer, the Birm guys would be flying small kits and not getting hit. There's a lot of variables besides a small kit that goes into the FOR's abilities to evade the BOP. I could name a bunch of them but two stuck out today and that was awareness and strength of wing for short bursts of speed. These birds aren't much more than squeekers and have only been flying well once and that was just yesterday. They were very impressive the way they handled this Coopers Hawk. I was proud of them!

You're right to be proud Alan. That is how I feel about my vet Birmies that have been attacked time after time and escaped. My oldest are 06s and only have 4 of them left in my A-Team.3 going into the breeder loft after this season. The smaller kit thing does make them less attractive but the henery still attacks even my cull kit of 5 birds. He doesn't have luck with them as they are 06s and pretty BOP savvy.

Re: Training Notebook

Not much to report on the kit... They have been flying good, they get up to pinhead size very fast and are starting to kit a little better. I am getting a little tail-riding but not much.

The Kelly bird does not like to fly high with the others. It cruises at high tree-top levels. I suspect the family is a low flying one but shouldn't judge them by this one bird. This bird is going with the Kelly kit of squeekers in the morning. I don't want her messing up the kit.

After the Kelly bird is gone I will have 10 in this kit. I have another Fehrholz kit of 8 squeekers that's about ready to be let out for the first time. I think I'll move a couple of birds from the first kit over to help them get started.

Re: Training Notebook

Never, ever fly the Fehrholz birds in the late afternoon! I had been doing this because I was basically homing them in and they would fly for about a half hour and come back and go straight in to roost. Well, I guess this kit got their wings under them now and are living up to being highfliers. Yesterday afternoon half the kit went up, up and away like Superman and eventually out of sight. I guess they were really enjoying themselves, problem is they were still up in the clouds when the sun was starting to set... two of them are now MIA, probably in California by now! I sure miscalculated! I didn't think they would take off and go so high and for so long this early in training.

Re: Training Notebook

Late evenings can be a real problem with high flyers because it is still light where they are flying and they end up chasing the sun. Been there, done that, no t-shirt!!

Re: Training Notebook

It wasn't evening when they started out. I know better, but these birds were so young and had only gone up 4 times previous. I figured it would be OK... but never again! The two birds I lost were two nice Bronze Mottles. They were so high, forget the binoculars, you would need a telescope to see these guys! emoticon
