Training Question At what point in the training should I not allow my birds to loaf around on the roof of my house. I think it is good for them to be up there when they first start learning their way. But, I don't want them to get in the habit of loafing around on the roof. What do you all suggest?
Re: Training Question Hi Michael,I only let my birds land where they're not suposed to when they are very young.Once they have control of flying and landing where they want to(with out crashing)and know how to trap the only place mine are allowed to land is on my kitbox or my garage first then right into the kitbox.I use little water balloons to throw at them to get them flying again.I used to use a tennis ball, but you don't have to go chasing after the water balloons.I don't know your training methods, but with mine if the young birds are out loafing around before or after flying,I don't have them hungry enough.Once I get them conditioned to flying and trapping at the sound of the feed can,I start to feed them up more to get them to stay up longer.Don't let them get into the habit of loafing, because it can be hard to break. Good luck Nick

Re: Training Question Thanks, Guys. I am still working on getting their feed situation where I want it. I will let you know when I start letting them fly.
Re: Training Question Micheal I let my young birds loaf on the roof of the kit box only. And then only until they learn to fly. I try to start them before they can fly. I put them on the landing board and after a few times they will fly up to the roof. The roof and the landing board are the only two places I will let them land regardless of thier age. Any where else is taboo. Once they come out and land only on the kit box and trap back in I cut the feed down to where they will trap after a few minutes. This way you never develop bad habits. Orientals will pick them up in a hurry.
Re: Training Question sharpshooter i use to do the same thing with the tennis ball to train my doniks.and use to get really tired of chasing that ball around, so i got an old spinning rod (fishing rod)spooled it with 60lb braided line tie on the tennis ball, not only do i get them off the roof and get my ball back with out moving my feet, i get to sharpen up on my casting skills came bass opener i look like a pro
Re: Training Question Danny, I use a waterballoon slingshot,I can reach down the street about 4 houses with it and if I hit something I wasn't suposed to there's no string leading back to me!!!
