Kit Boxes

How are you guys building your kit boxes. Are they the same as for Birmingham Rollers?
I understand they you only fly 12-16 at most, at a time. Can I get away with a slightly smaller kit box?
Do the FOR's require more space?
I would like to build a new (3) section kit box. May as well do it right the first time.

Keith

Re: Kit Boxes

The main difference is they need more space per bird because they are slightly larger and much more aggressive.

Also you fly no more than 15 if you don't want broken kits. A 20 bird Birmingham box should be good for a 12 bird FOR kit. But if you use box perches make them a little larger

And flying them with other strains of FORs or Pigeon breeds will hinder their performance. I do not like flying them Birminghams. They fly a lot different and mess each other up. Birminghams fly more like butterflies, whereas FORs fly aggressive and fast and more erratic with some diving and show-boating, more like a Lark.

Re: Kit Boxes

I usually fly three to twelve in a kit. More if a full kit of Ferholz. I dont like the larger kits because it is hard to tell who is doing what. I had up sixteen today and had some young birds doing really well but can only tell one from the rest. I had ten Husbands, two Fehrholts, and four Barred. It looked like four buffs, four blacks, and eight Tuffs. The actual was one black Barred, one blue Barred, one Ember barred, one yellow barred, two bronze Fehrholts, two buff Husbands, one yellow Husband, and seven Tuffs, about half blue barred and half red barred. I will have to break the kits down to the colors and families to find out which are the best.

Each bird need at least twelve inches of head room and need adequate lateral space so as not to crowd. They are cantankerous and will claim two perches if they are very close.

That said I keep up to twenty five in the same box and fly as many as I choose at one time. I try to leave at least one spare perch for the unlucky bird at the bottom of the totem pole. I may have as many as eight kits in one box. Then as time permits I fly them in smaller kits. If I dont have time I combine a couple to three or six together.

I've never use or see kit box in use, I flew OR out of loft w/o aviary. Anyone with expirience flying wit and without kit box? If I use it what benefits are to be expected vs. flying out of loft?

Samir I know people that free loft them and say they have just as good of flying. The only time I see a problem is with birds on eggs or squeaks.

I'm planning a kit box for FOR's, any thoughts or suggestions on the size? Along with this, what is a good size for a kit?

4' wide-4' high and 3' deep so you can reach the back of the kitbox are good dementions.Wire floor 1/2" X1" wire.I use 4" ABS pipe 45 degree elbows for traps with a sliding door to close it up.

Re: Kit Boxes

Wayne,
I built my FOR kit boxes the same size as I would a Birmingham kit box. 4" high X 3' deep x 3' wide. I hung the kit box on the outside of a shed so that I could feed from the inside. (It rains a lot here in the Northwest). I built (2) 9 perch box perches and hung them on the sides of the box. I have doors on the inside to feed and water through, and doors on the outside to release the birds from. I used bob traps because I had some, I prefer the 4" 45% PVC pipe traps, and will likely convert them over in the future. The floors are 1" x 2" wire.

Re: Kit Boxes

Nice setup Kieth. I have twelve kit boxes that are four feet high by thirty two inches wide by thirty inches deep. I keep no more than twelve Orientals in them and no more than sixteen other breeds. they work great. I was the mobile trailer that I built but I have since put it on blocks in the back yard by my rifle range. It is much more challenging with the Coopers as they cant resist trying in that close of proximity even when thy know that arent supposed to be able to catch them. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Pics coming when I solve my I.T. problems. emoticon
