Success
I had heard that the Husband Tuff & Buff were difficult to get flying but experience has made me a believer.
They started just sitting on the kit box. After a couple of days of this I crated them up and released them in the side field 150 feet away looking at the kit box. I actually had to chaise them to get them to fly up off the ground. Then it was just a beeline to the kit box. After a couple of days of that I followed advise given by Wes Lantz through Samir. I released the oldest two with my young Birminghams. They lifted above the tree tops and flew for 10 minutes.
Thanks Wes and Samir for the good advise.

Re: Success
I have a sore arm from throwing tennis balls at mine. Then they get it the trees where I can't reach them. But, they have finally started flying on their own. It just took them a few weeks. I wish I didn't like my trees so much!
Last year, I had some BRs to release with them but now I just have FORs. I stocked my best flying birds and gave the others away to a kid who wanted to try raising some birds. Hopefully, these will be flying high when my next round is ready to start.

Re: Success
Michael, get a water balloon slingshot, they can tree sit as high as they want and you can still reach them.Good for keeping the neighbor kids off the new grass as well, pretty fun too,if the kids run fast!

What kind do you have? All I can find around here require three people.

Re: Success
So, would it be advisable to start young FORs with some rollers?

Re: Success
Michael, it's the "launcher" http://www.slingking.com/
Wayne, I just get them out of the "sitting" stage by flushing them off of everything except my garage and kitbox roof. Once they start flying around good, they have always skied up on their own. This is the Fehrholz,I don't know about any other strains.

Re: Success
My Husbands never fly as high as the Fehrholz or Amir birds. The Husbands and Fehrholz have run me and the dogs ragged, chasing them off the tree, chicken coop, barn roof and the ground, but they are all up and away now. I have not had the problem with my "Amir" birds.

Re: Success
I don't have much of a problem getting mine going either. Most get up on their own. But if I do get some lazy birds the balloon slingshot works great.I think the key is to have the habit be coming out and flying, not letting them learn to loaf around.

Re: Success
Three more releases with the Birminghams and they are still only flying for around 5 minutes. Still much better than what I was getting flying them on there own. I am going to have to start mixing which kit of Birminghams I am flying them with or I am going to teach the Birminghams some bad habits.
I have been trying to resist flagging them off the kit roof. I have taught Birminghams to just sit in the trees out of tennis ball range before and do not want to repeat that mistake. I think that it is time to move my release point from across the yard to on the street on the other side of the house to down the street. Try to make them elevate to see the loft. I will work them out slow as I do not want to report losing them.
