Enhanced Performance

To encourage the OR's to really turn it on, do you use a Yo-Yo feeding system? Or are there other techniques.

Nick has said before the yo-yo system doesn't work you'll wind up have low flying non performers but there must be a really fine line of how much to feed them.I've found they sure do like to sit on the roof if they aren't hungry. But how hungry should we make them ?

Re: Enhanced Performance

I've never had to monkey with any special techniques to get the Fehrholz birds to perform, not saying it won't work, just that I never had to.I did try cutting them back (like Birms) and they flew ALOT lower, not as deep and no where as long. I keep them hungry just the first few times out,so they trap good. Then they pretty much get all the food they want. I like them to fly WAAAAAY up there and for a long time,so that doesn't go too well with cutting back the feed and keeping them hungry.I think they really like to high fly and once they are started I don't have any problem with roof/tree sitting.Open the door and they go out and up. I'm going to be flying some ORs from a portable this year.Obviously,I'm going to have to cut their feed down,so I don't have to sit there all day or have them go way up out of sight. I don't know how they'll do performance wise. The best rolling I've seen is when the birds are way up there. If I don't like the results,I'll scrap the idea and fly some Horner Birms out of the portable.Like I've said before, the Fehrholz birds really seem to enjoy what they are doing up there. To me,Birms don't look like they enjoy the roll and it has to be forced out of them by feeding techniques. The Ors will roll then do a twizzle, then a tailslide and who knows what is coming next. The Birms just do that mechanical roll, like they can't help it. I'm not knocking Birms,I love to watch good ones. Some guys use elaborate feeding techniques with their ORs,who knows maybe it works. I think it's more for the handler than the birds.I see ORs as a high flying/rolling breed and the only way I'm able to get that result is to feed them up.I'm only talking Fehrholz birds here, that's all I've flown for quite some time now. When I find something I like,I stick with it. emoticon I've talked with Dennis and he pretty much does the same with his Fehrholz and gets the same results.Roy,my suggestion would be to talk to who you got the birds from and see what works for them.Try out what they recommend,if it doesn't work out start playing around with one change at a time.

Re: Enhanced Performance

What you describe Nick is pretty much what I am experiencing, it does appear that the OR's enjoy performing where as the BR's need to be stressed into rolling?
I am trying a mobile box also, starting soon to box train some young Husbands. I have the box built, droppers trained, now to get the OR young trained to the box!
