Roof sitters

One kit of 6 youngsters I have, born Dec,Jan and February, have been flying several weeks now but when they land won't trap in for ages.It is so frustrating because I want to fly other birds but with them on the roof when I put up another kit, they always go up and fly again with the next kit.Tonight I was feeding them in the twilight,it was that late before they came in finally after making a final show along with 8 Donek divers.Been feeding the 6 just over 1/2 a cup of mix and have even tried cutting them back a bit but don't want to cut them too much and they still figure there is something better to eat in the gutter. My BRs get fed about the same ration and they trap in toot sweet every time.No problems with the Donek or Homers either so,jeeeeezzzz I don't know what I'm doing wrong with these 6.Had another kit of 7 ORs flying earlier in the year,I lost 4 in an overfly, but never had a problem with that kit trapping.Any suggestions?

Kelly It looks like you did not have the patience when you started with training. If they fly long enough and perform well do not fedd them at all for one day an wait to see what happens. If some start to come back , feed only those birds bout the others that are lait do not feed again. After few days they should start to come back down right away.Than you start with normal feeding and flying program. The age you have right now is on the edge of being mature, that means the hormons are kicking in.Verry dificult to train any habbits.I hope this helps.

Kelly....I would do as Amir suggests. When I have any late birds, they don't get fed when they finally do trap. By not feeding them they get the message very quickly the next time or two. And remember, try to keep them alittle on the hungry side while in trap training.

I've cut them back the last couple days and they definately are coming in faster now.A marked advance in their performance too, right away, only flyin 3 at a time instead of 6.I had them trap trained well at first but they developed this nasty habit of pecking in the gutter for an hour or 2.I'll get 'em straightened out or they will me maybe!?

"Gutter pickers" When the birds are done flying call them in...no sitting on the loft! Birds are either in the air or in the loft..Also less chance of getting picked off by the BOP!

Birds should be enjoyed on the ground as well.Especcially OR-s.That is the breed you should enjoy even when they are done flying. After flying I get my birds to get into the loft and than they are allowed to enjoy the grass and walking and take a bath. They understand that as reward for good flying and performance.OR-s are not Birmingham rollers and not the prisoners in the first place.More they fell comfortable the better they are going to do as flyiers, performers and parents.

Re: Roof sitters

Amir,
Do you feed your birds once they are in,then let them out again to bath and hang out on the grass,or do you get them into the loft and release them again without feeding?I have a lot of birds and to let them peck around on the ground would prevent other birds from flying because of a lack of time, especially now the days are getting shorter FAST.Some days I fly 5 kits of birds plus try to fly some Doneks.Oh,and the white racers fly every day too pretty much.If I leave some birds pecking around on the ground outside and free to fly up or down, they mess up the performance of birds I'm trying to fly.I hope to retire one day and be able to spend all day working my birds and the garden but that is a little ways off yet. emoticon

Kelly don't feed them right away after flying.wait until you are done with flying and than you let those out.Hunger is still your best controler for pigeons. They can wait.

Re: Roof sitters

That is what I figured.I need more time in the day or less birds to fly.
Everyone has different ways to handle their birds and when you mention another way to handle ORs,I'm curious.
