hawks and migration.
The hawks are getting plentiful, but for some reason I havent seen one while flying my kits in a week. I have them circling the house every morning checking out the poultry in flocks. But by the time I feed every thing and do my honey do's they have headed north I guess.
Yall better look out up north. they're a coming.

Re: hawks and migration.
Here in Southern Arizona I haven't seen any sign of the migration yet. I know when it happens because they are starving and thick like flies. They hang on my loft screens drooling over the birds and even try and grab some feet through the expanded steel floors. I have to shoo them away like flies at a picnic. But once the migration is over, I don't see anything till September. That's the period I like to train my squeekers.

Re: hawks and migration.
Hummmmm? Anyone know when the best time of year it is to fly squeakers in Southern California? It seems I see BOP all year round. There must be prime time to train here too
Anyway, I'm going to try flying the Orme birds this month once I get the first kit box complete. I'll give you the blow by blow. I'll be able to fly them around 4:15PM everyday

Re: hawks and migration.
From what I have been told by the So Cal guys, it's the same as here, May - September. The migration seems to happen here around the last of March and continues for about 2 weeks but there are some holdovers in April and it seems there's more and more every year.
Of course So Cal has more residents than So AZ but once spring gets here they will have more easy meals as well (especially with all the rain we have received this winter), so they are less likely to expend a lot of energy chasing adult Pigeons.
I am by no means a Raptor expert, these are just a few things I have learned in my own back yard through the years.

Re: hawks and migration.
Paul, your 100% correct about the hawks moving north.I seen 3 today with fla. tags on their tails 'The Sunshine State' [lol] Actually Hawk attacks seem to have slowed down in the late afternoons here in Ga. and are more active early in the AM.Hawks gave up chasing my 07 racers[hawk scouts] but sure do enjoy scattering youngster kits of birms.I fly rollers every day at different times and only when i see wild birds, squirrels, etc moving around in the area. The trees are budding and soon will have leaves which usually means less attacks.I hope to have real rollers [FOR'S] by then.

Re: hawks and migration.
I flew three kits today with hawks circling everywhere. I had Donb and Snake Doctor down to see Orientals fly first hand. We were hoping for a hawk attack but none would even pay the birds any attention even though four or five were hunting at the time. Aggravating trained hawks!
Snake Doctor said he was impressed. He left with Orientals.

Re: hawks and migration.
I am probably the only pigeon person in the world to say I really miss the migration. Cant wait till the fall to train some more birds. I havent had a hawk attack in several weeks now. I still have my two resident pair but they wont chase a bird. One pair of Red Tails and one pair of Coopers. I think there is a pair of sharp shin down the road a piece.
I did have a South American Kite make a few passes yesterday but he was way too slow to even throw off the kit. They just circle him and never broke formation.

Re: hawks and migration.
We are having the craziest weather ever. I have already had my AC on in the evening and now I have a fire in the heater going. We have been doing forty eighty swings. Even has hit eighty five once.
