First time in four years

Today was the first time I have seen a mature(about seven months)Oriental get caught by a BOP. I had a white Husband get caught by a mature male cooper from ambush. They were comong in to land and he struck. for some reason the bird went the wrong way and got nailed.

Earlier the same cooper killed one of my Fireballs. I chased him nearly a quarter mile till he finally gave it up.

I thought he was gone but hit again when the next kit was landing. I chased him again and got the white away from him but both birds died.

At least he didnt get to eat. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Definitely a bummer but I put up the OR's just in case he came back. Location definitely plays a part though because I still fly my Birms predator free. I my pasture a quarter mile from the "kill zone".

The Husband whites just don't seem like a good evasive strain. They seem too heavy to me.. at least the ones I got from Kyle. And I believe they are the same ones.

They are the same ones that came from Kyle. I wouldnt rate them as top notch evaders but they do pretty good. They have been hit numerous times when landing before. What was amazing to watch was when he hit the Fireballs.

He ran down a red check cоck in a space of fifty yards with so little effort. It makes you realize just how fast and quick the Orientals are.

An Oriental in that same distance would be gaining on the raptor. Just showed how much difference there is.

It must be a very experienced pigeon catcher.

I hate to see it, but that's one way to make your stock better. If he had a weakness that allowed him to get caught, at least he won't pass it on in the gene pool.

That particular Cooper must have been trained up north eating Birms. emoticon emoticon He is the best/worst I have ever seen. emoticon I hope he doesnt hang around too long as I have six or eight late hatch squeaks that I am trying to start. I stand with them constantly when they are out. I dont even dare turn out the Doneks or Prussian tumblers. I flew the Husbands today and he pushed them out of sight with some help of a couple of others, probably Peris. They were out of sight for nearly thirty minutes and finally I saw wing flashes when the sun hit them. They came down after about an hour and dove in the box. emoticon emoticon emoticon

No casualties, but no performance either.

Re: First time in four years

sorry to read about your loss SIPPI.
Todays experience was my closest to loosing 2 bird than i've had with the or's despite the warnings from the guineas.
2 BOP's[very dark colored bop's ????] attacked together as the 4 flying or's were about to land after a 1/2 hour of flying and performing well.all 4 or's dispersed in different directions and were out of sight in no time.I noticed 1 of the 2 bops were holding something captive on the ground as the other tried to steal it away[it seemed].after running up the driveway, both bops took off and 1 flew low to the ground with an obvious capture.
It turned out that they hit a squirrel out of a tree but my 4 or's were still missing.i waited about an hour and no returnees so i went home.
After returning to the lofts just before dark,i noticed 3 OR's were in their kit box and to my surprise the other[dunn] was in an empty kit box which i had just emptied this morning.I parted with 45 birms[4 kits] and 6 pair of woe's to a friend in Ga. so now i figured i had less targets for the BOP'S,I thought !!!
The lesson i learned from this was 'don't boast about not loosing FOR's like i did in A message a couple days ago.ANYTHINGS POSSABLE when it comes to predatures.I personally think that ther BOP's stood a better chance at hitting the or's while they were rolling and especially tail dancing because they will easily drop 30-50 feet in a taildance alone not counting the spins and flips.Obliviously they had squirrel on their menu.
Anybody know What kind of hawk is almost black, thinner than a coopersbut much more trimlined? What cha think Nick? or anyone else,im just curious so i can read up on them.
My guess would be merlins and these are a first sighting for me.i got so used to coopers and red tails that i forgot about the other native breeds.I looked at pics online but most were BOP's were from out west and other areas.I never seen 2 like these before.
later,

Hey Mike, If it took a squirrel it aint a Merlin. They're just little guys, about the same size as the fehrholz birds or smaller and feed mostly on small birds and insects. Some mature coops have an almost black head and back and so do Goshawks but they're almost crow size. Some dark phase redtails are almost black,a very dark brown. The only hawks I know of close to your area that are black are short tailed hawks, but they usally don't come up much past mid Florida or a dark phase Rough leg hawk which usally don't get down as far as you.Black Hawks are black, but they live out by Alan. WOW !!! VERY INTERESTING NICK AND I THANK YOU FOR YOUR DESCRIPTIONS.IM GOING UP TO THE FARM NOW TO FLY THE OLDER FOR'S AND SEE WHAT COMES AROUND.SINCE I SOLD ALL MY BIRMS YESTERDAY,THE BOP's WILL HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER ''FAST FOOD'' AREA...... HOPEFULLY I CAN GET ME A COUPLE ACTION PICS TODAY OF THE BOP'S IN ACTION.IM ARMED WITH MY CAMERA AND SOONER OR LATER IM BOUND TO GET A GOOD PIC OF THEM.I DID NOTICE THAT THESE 2 BOP's AREN'T AS BRAZEN AS THE COOPERS AND REDTAILES AND IM NOT RULING THEM OUT AS BEING THE ATTACKER.FROM WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT MERLINS,THEY ARE DEFINATELY RULED OUT AND I USUALLY DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH REDTAILS.IN FACT THEY SELDOM BOTHER THE PIGEONS IN THE AIR .THEY WILL TRY TO GO THROUGH WIRE,TRAP DOORS OR ANY LOFT OPENINGS 4 SURE [as im sure your aware of]!!!I'VE SEEN THE MERLINS ON THE ELECTRIC LINES OBSERVING THE PASTURES BEFORE AND I HAVE TO ADMIT THEY ARE INCREDABLE LOOKING BIRDS 4 SURE.
 THANKS BUDDY,
P.S.-CHECK YOUR EMAIL.
