Mike,
My heart goes out to you… emoticon Like others, I know that sickening feeling that comes over you, when you see (w/ your own eyes) a BOP take one of your birds. emoticon Even Dale Husband loses a bird from time to time. Which is why he is quick to tell people, FOR’s are NOT perfect and you’ll lose one from time to time. Even the best OR can meet its match one day. emoticon
Again, sorry to learn of your loss, please take heart and keep on w/ your ORs. As we all know, this is just another example of “breed from the sky, not the ground”. Which isn’t to mean that the birds we lose, are not good fliers. Some are just better, quicker and faster than other. So if that Kelly was a good flier for you before this, then its off spring should still be watched for continuing its family. emoticon
Wishing you better days ahead....

  Well said Bill. When we lose a bird to the BOP or flyaways it will make the family of birds that are left stronger as the old saying goes the strong survive and the week perish. This does not make one feel better but it is part of the game.
  Mike all of us that fly birds feel for you. I also race homers and we loose plenty of racers each year to BOP and the unknown. Last year my best two long distance birds did not return from a 600 mile race both had been their before twice and had been diploma birds.I had a bird clock from the same race so we have a new number one long distance race bird.

Sorry to hear of your loses. But loses come with the flying game. Either in over flies or to the BOP. I have learned to be very careful when and how I fly my birds this time of year when the BOP are at their strongest and hungriest.

As you know, FORs are not Hawk-proof. The correct term would be Hawk-resistant.

Alan,
I read somewhere in the forum a while back that someone said;
'' FLY DON'T CRY '' but they never told me when to stop emoticon
now i ''CRY WHEN I CAN'T FLY''.
Today was very lonely in the sky especially for the 2 coopers that were in the same pine tree awaiting my release of birds.hopefully they will get the message that the kitchens closed until further notice.
btw; The kelly bird is still alive and eating,drinking and amazingly standing on both feet.i think he'll make it.
Thanks for your responce Alan

Mike sorry to hear. It is tough to lose your birds before your eyes. I have lost hundreds over the years and it still pisses me off. This years migration was the worst ever. I got hit today by some kind of buteo and a cooper at the same time. Times must be getting really hard as the large buteos rarely if ever mess with me except to eat my chicks and guinea keets.
