Looks like I lost another one

I had four birds up 3 blacks and 1 cream I was watching them when up they went I knew there was a BOP around abour 30 seconds later here came a peri in full dive in less then a heart beat the cream was in the oak trees with the peri wright on it's tail they went out of site and I never did see either come up and no yellow tonight. That makes one Buff and one Cream gone this year. I will lock the birds up for a few days so it does not get in the habit of waiting for the birds to come out.

Man that sucks. I am flying predator free now days again. I had a medium sized hawk fly over the kit box while the birds were bathing and laying around but he didnt even look down. Maybe she didnt get caught.

TOUGH BREAK BOB,
WHAT LINE OF OR WAS THE CREAM OUT OF.WOULD YOU AGREE THAT BOP'S WILL HIT LIGHTER COLORED BIRDS MORE-OFTEN THAN DARKER? THE ONES I LOST WERE TIGERED COLORED BIRDS AND THEY SEEM TO STANDOUT MORE WHEN FLYING BUT THEN AGAIN,MY KELLY RED WAS HIT TOO AND IT WAS THE FASTEST FLYING BIRD OF ALL.
I KNOW THAT WHITE HOMERS WILL GET HIT QUICKER THAN BLUE BARS AND BLUE CHECKS.I KNOW A BOP IS NOT INTERESTED IN WHAT BREED A BIRD IS BECAUSE THEY ALL TASTE THE SAME AND I KNOW THAT BOP'S WILL DO ANYTHING FOR A MEAL DURING WINTER MONTHS WHEN THEIR HUNGRY BUT IM INTERESTED IN HEARING YOUR OPINION.
They say only the strong survive AND its a good way of cullin weak birds but i believe color is a big factor in all seasons.
KEEP THE FAITH BOB,WINTERS ALMOST OVER AND I'LL LUCK WILL GET BETTER,

A Homer guy once said when he flew a couple of white Homers with his Blues, the whites were the ones the Hawks went after.. but when he flew a couple of Blues with his kits of whites, the hawks went after the Blues first. His conclusion is it's not the color that attracts them, it's the distinction.

I said that before on here. I think the hawks pick out the bird that stands out from the crowd, whether it's the color, different wing beat ,speed, etc. Mike,If you flew all tigers and one black,I bet they would take a pass at the black. I do think the lighter colors are easier for the hawk to spot from far away. You know from flying the NY flights how those white wings give that "flash" even when the birds are way up.

I'm not so sure about the BOP making any distinction of colour in a flock.I have a couple pied birds in my flock of white homers and they are no more vulnerable than the rest.Still have not lost one of them whites since jan 08 around the loft flying. When I do lose the odd one is on tosses away from home.

Everyone has their own opinion on it. I just base mine on my own birds and on other things I have seen first hand. You know I'm a falconer and hunt with hawks and I go out hunting with alot of other guys.I've seen them zero in on the "odd"bird so many times I think there is something to it.Flush a flock of 10 mallards and only 1 or 2 are hens,9 times out of ten the hawk will go after a hen. Or flush a flock of 50 mallards under a falcon with one drake pintail in it,guess what the falcon usally singles out? If anything shows a sign of weakness or has something that makes them not blend into the crowd,(lagging behind, slow or funny wingbeat, etc) then they usally get picked.Losing the bird on a training toss, doesn't mean a hawk got it for sure,it might have got lost, strayed to a different loft, got shot, hit a wire and on and on.

I think the hawks do pick out the odd colored bird or one that shows any weakness.
I have not lost any of my black Family (Ferholze) with a little Husband. The two I lost to BOP were both Husbands. The latest had been hit a week ago or so as she had a couple of tail feathers missing. The black family go higher when they get hit and the cream family head for the ground which I believe makes it easyer for the Peri to out fly them.
