Dennis,

You sure don't have the problem with BOP that I do.

Alan, Three miles to the west of my loft are Five Racing Homer guys and they fly most every day. I don't think I have less BOP. The feed trough, cafeteria style is just down the street. Two of the guys says they get hit almost every time they fly!

My problem is the large trees around the house. There's a huge 50 year old Eucalyptus Tree next door that they ambush me from and then I have two Cottonwoods in my back yard, I would like to cut down. I don't have much problem with the older, more experienced birds, but trying to settle squeekers in the winter is a pain. They come out of those trees and terrorize the squeekers. I lose about 75% of them from over flies, from being chased. There's a close relative of the Coopers (Sharpshinned or something) that's the worse on squeekers because they sit around in the trees and wait for hours as they try and come home and attack them one by one. The Coopers seem to just attack and leave but this other species sticks around and waits for them to return.

I understand what you are saying Dennis. I live two or three blocks from a dairy. There are hundreds of pigeons there. Maybe thousands. With that many pigeons eggs are laid and hatched every day. Squeakers leave the nest ever day. And every day birds get old and sick there. So its' kinda a smorgasbord for the hawks. However there is a down side to this. I live in a residential neighborhood. And with that many pigeons my neighbors are not very supportive.

As for BOP vs Homers.... I had homers for years & was hit heavily by BOP. However,
any homer can outfly a hawk... homers are not slow or cumbersome in the air. The BOP
would pick them off when they were landing on the loft to trap in. I lived in a very
heavily treed area and my birds had to corkscrew in to land ... this is when hawk sitting in trees would ambush them... once the homer escaped and they were out in the open a hawk NEVER got them. FOR may be great evaders, but so are homers.

Hey Mark! Nice to see you here!

You are right, the big trees directly above the loft make a big difference. I have two cotton-less Cottonwoods out back that are going down this fall. My wife likes the shade but the pollen from them in the last month about killed me. And they make good ambush centers for the Coopers Hawks in the winter.

As a wildlife biologist and a racing homer guy for over 50 years I can agree 100% with your comments. The fact of the matter here on the bald prairies birds have better than a 50% 50% chance in evading pirds of prey. On the other hand if your loft is located near trees the odds tip in favor of the birds of prey. Here most of us lock our birds up from late October till late April...or dinner time for the birds of prey!
When I taught in Montana a friend flew Pergrine Falcons (Peale's Falcon) the falcon was just about out of site a homer was liberated by the time the homer veared the falcon hit the bird so hard you could hear it then a puff of feathers then he broke the almost dead birds neck~~~all in the flash of a heartbeat!
