First BOP this year...

Well yesterday morning I went outside and opened all the doors so the birds could get into their flight cages and get the morning sun. I came back into the house and was making my coffee. All of a sudden I "heard" aloud thump and my birds were flying franticlly in their flight cages. I ran outside and what did I "see"!!!! :yikes!: Mr.Cooper was clinging to the side of one of the flight cages, cherping like "hell". All my birds dissapared inside the loft. I started yelling, screeming and clapping my hands. I think Mr.Cooper was as startled,as I was... He took off and made several circles above my loft, then headed back towards the wood. I waited for afew hours. Later on I was able to give all my kits fly time "SAFELY"....:thumbs.up:
Guess it's about that time again...lol

I had one all over my lofts yesterday. The Pigeons were going nuts. This Hawk had to be a new one to the neighborhood. The residents know they can't catch anything here and don't both even checking the place out. It's time for the migratory Hawks. That's what I believe these are. It's not a good time to start training new birds. :eeek:

Last year I had it good all August and up till Sept 15th the skies were pretty much clear for flying Rollers. This year the Henery have not let up at all most of the summer. The good thing has been it seems they have mostly been just practicing and I haven't lost much.

The peri hen has gone galavanting elsewhere but the male just won't give up.Darn thing has been attacking at least one kit every day with no real hits but it just don't seem to be able to get it through his little head that he can't catch my birds. emoticon

Well,I posted my delima at the beginning of the week. Yesterday, the weather was kinda overcast and gloomy,so I let out 2 kits of older birds together and a kit of young birds. The older ones went up immediately and the younger ones were flying around at about 50' above the ground. All of a sudden, the younger ones "scattered" all over in different directions. That damned ol'Cooper made a pass at them and snatched one of the young ones. I started screaming as loud as I could, clapping my hands at the same time as I ran after it. I must have startled Mr. Cooper :yikes!:,cause it flew just about 20' above the ground for about 100' and dropped the bird, as he flew up into the trees across the road. I was able to retrieve the youngster with only a minor punture wound at the base of the wing. I looked up to see exactely where the others were. They were flying up at least 1000'or better. What a relief :thumbs.up:. As I searched the skies I could see the cooper soaring about, under my kit, afew hundred feet. My birds stayed up above the cooper until he disapered. They were up for almost 3 1/2 hours. Looks like my "friendly" skies are "not" so friendly after all..

Just had my first hawk attack!! Happened just minutes ago. A couple fellows were over that have never seen rollers before. I let them out and they were performing really nice at 300' or so when this little hawk joins in. At first glance I thought it was a dove. damn thing was smaller than the pigeon it was after. It chased my only hen to the ground. She hit estimated 40 mph on her breast. Stunned from the collision with the ground, she just layed there while I picked her up. Didn't appear to have broken anything. I'll keep checking her through the day. She has young 7 days old to care for no less. I put her in the nest with them. So far she is still stunned. I keep running what Nick told me through my head. "Never fly what you can't afford to lose". I thought my birds were impervious to hawks. Wrong!!!

Hey Joe,
She'll be fine if she is just shocked.
The falcons have been having goes at my birds pretty much every day lately.Even the hen has not had any luck 'cept for one BR lost about 10 days ago.Had a Merlin attacking 2 days ago and it didn't seem to have much chance against the 7 ORs I had up in the air when all of a sudden 2 little songbirds came out of nowhere and flew straight at that hawk, one delivered a glancing blow to that hawk and you should of seen it hightail outta here.My mini air force in action. emoticon
Last night the male henery showed up when I had 9 OR up there. They were all flying in close kit formation when he attacked then they all split up and started doing tailrides and dives all around the falcon while he tried to figure out who the heck should he go for next,me smacking the bottom of a 5 gallon plastic bucket the whole time.He wasn't giving up easily tho so out came the Canadian Rocket left over from last Halloween. That worked. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
