Orme Strain
Known as the good bad and ugly. This is my first year with FORs. I raised about 20 this year. They seem to perform best in small kits, some are surprising in the air, I'm not sure what to call some of there maneuvers? I've been flying them continuous about 4 days a week, and have not lost a one to bop! Its amazing to see them drop down and do a tite circle around a sitting bop, the bop must get scared by this aggressive action. I've seen this happen 3 times and each time the bop has flown away.

Re: Orme Strain
Lantzer good for you. Nonbelievers will not believe they do that until they see it with thier own eyes. I have a Husband white that will go head to head with them in flight. I really boogers the BOP when the OR's act aggressive. They dont know how to react and usually fy away shaking thier head.

Re: Orme Strain
I have found BOP to be real chickens when challenged. They remind me of Feral cats. They are afraid of anything that will fight back. I feed the Grackles (Black Birds) here because those little squirts aren't afraid of a Coopers Hawk. They will send them running with their tails between their legs.

Re: Orme Strain
Ya Sippy, as you have said these guys(and hens) on occasion will fly straight at the bop I have not lost one of the kit that has did this. I have even seen one alone 2 times circle 10' above a Birm. taken to ground by a bop he looked like he was trying to un-nerve the bop to let the hen loose.

Re: Orme Strain
A decade ago Mark Orme wrote, or it was someone else on old FOR site.quote: A true "Oriental Roller" has the energy to out-maneuver a hawk with its flying ability, speed, and skill. One of their many tactics is to fly towards the hawk, thereby ruining its chance to set up an attack.
I'v witnesed Crows and many Robin and Sparow size birds, do this to hawks or cats, but never a pigeon. After multiple claims of this abbility in some strains of FOR pigeons I cannot remain a Nonbeliver any more.
I wonder if this is posible to bred out and use to form "hawk kits".

Re: Orme Strain
Doneks will dive at BOP and fly after them. The Kit of Catalonians I had would also fly a circle around BOP and when the BOP would drift away my birds would come back. I had the hawk turn over on it back and reach out and grab at a Doneks. The hawk only got a couble tail feathers. These Middle Eastern birds must have this bred into them.

Re: Orme Strain
I've seen my Doneks dive at the Henery before but the trouble was that time he already a youngster in his grips and the one diving at him didn't help any.

Re: Orme Strain
Back in Bosnia I was told by some Macedonians that their Doneks descend from OR.

Re: Orme Strain
My most aggressive white bird is also the best performer. I will breed him to the best performing hen and hopefully carry forth both traits.
Developing the aggression will probably be a long term venture but would be well worth persueing.
