Re: most popular strains
Nick and Roy,
How quick do your ORs trap in if you feed them up always?I'm still having a problem with my early 09 kit staying on the roof too long after they come down.

Re: most popular strains
Kel, They pretty much hit my garage roof, walk to the edge, hop over to the box and trap right in.They land on the garage first because there are trees on the other side of the box that make it hard to come in from that side. The box is about 2' from the garage.I do cut their feed until they are trapping really fast. That usally only takes a few times out. Then I start feeding them more. When I let them out they have to go up or I make them go up.No sitting anywhere out side the box allowed.Sometimes they will land on the garage first for a few seconds then as soon as one goes,it's blast off. When they trap in they get all they can eat for around 15 minutes, then the food comes out.(at first it may only be 2 minutes, you just have to go by how they act) If anybody is hanging around outside and traps in after that, they don't eat until tomorrow. They learn to trap in pretty quick once they do that a few times. If a bird is late because he was still flying he gets fed when he traps. I'll pull the lazy one out of the box and then the food goes back in,the other birds eat more if they want as well. After awhile they are conditined to trap right in as soon as they land,to the point where you can even feed them some before you fly them.(you'll get real high flying and they'll stay up for a long time, that's what I shoot for)If they start to get lazy trapping,do the no trap/no food routine for awhile again, with a little less food, until they're back in the game. Are you flying seperate sex kits? cоckbirds can be a pain about trapping if they want to drive hens around the roof and that keeps some of the hens out as well. The Coopers hawks are good teachers as well. They give my birds two choices, fly then trap quick or die. One thing I have learned about the ORs is they like routine and form a habit pretty quick. Your job is to make sure it's a good habit.

Re: most popular strains
Sher....I have homers that I don't race... I have them just for pure pleasure and my birds do wonder around on the ground. As a matter of fact I just put in a limestone driveway around my barn and my birds "love" landing and picking the smaller gravel. My homers are out pretty much of the day. They come and go in and out of their loft all day long. I lock them in when I fly my ruby's, my orientals and fireballs.

Re: most popular strains
By fed up, I mean I ration a larger amount per bird than the 1 Tablespoon/bird most say they feed BR's. I figure my birds do best on 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 Tbsp. per bird. Husbands 1 1/2 Tbsp. the Fehrholz and Amirs 1 3/4 Tbsp. I fly early morning and feed about 5 minutes after they come down, I try to let them cool down a little before feeding. I use White Indian Fantails as droppers and when I toss them up they will hit the box roof and within a minute of the first bird hitting the roof they will trap and all follow them in. I don't fly the OR's in kits larger than 6 birds and try to fly the cоcks and hens separately. I have better success with the 4" PVC 45 degree plumbing fitting than with the bob traps. My feed is 1/3 Milo, 1/3 Wheat 1/3 Peas no corn too stinkin hot here. Sometimes I give them a 1/4 tsp/bird of Canary seed the afternoon before the next morning fly. It seems to work well so far. I fly one day rest them 2 days. My Fehrholz will definitely get lazy if they are too well fed. I haven't had that problem with the Husbands or Amirs?

Re: most popular strains
I think it all depends on what you are looking for out of your birds. I think that ORs are suposed to be a high flying performing breed,so that's what I shoot for. I like them to pin out and stay up high,as long as possible. If you want to try and fly a bunch of different kits in a day, feeding up(the way I do it) is not the way to go,they'll stay up for hours at a time.Cool breezy mornings are what I like the best for flying them.Fly your birds the way you like to see them go. To me 500 feet isn't high flying,I like them to go in and out of sight. Then they usally really tear it up on the way down.

Re: most popular strains
I don't like my birds to pin-out, I want to see what the birds are doing. The Husbands will not fly nearly as high as the Fehrholz and Amirs.

Re: most popular strains
Roy,Try it with a kit some time. I've been flying them for quite awhile now and have always got the best performance out of the Fehrholz on their way back down from pinned out. They really look like they're having a good time up there. I watch them with binoculars sometimes. I think they're high enough when you look up and can only see a flash from a wing every once and awhile. To each his own,fly 'em like you like 'em.

Re: most popular strains
I am still learning Nick, I have not had the experience you describe, I will try to get em up higher!!!! and see what happens!
Thanks for the explanation!
How many do you fly in the kit and do you fly the cоcks and hens separately?
