Fehrholz Strain
Does anyone know the background of the Fehrholz strain. Where did the birds originate? Also what colord do they come in?
How does their size compare to some of the other strains? I won't even ask to rank their preformance!!!
Sincerely,
Richard

Re: Fehrholz Strain
Richard,Andy Estrada brought in the origional imports, look back into the old fors newsletters and you can see pics of them. They're from Hartmut Fehrholz in Germany. Hard to come by any 100% Fehrholz birds, most available for sale are from the line of birds that had Terry Rhodes bird crossed in.Even though you didn't ask,High and deep.

Re: Fehrholz Strain
To add to what Nick said, the influence of the one Terry Rhodes hen that was crossed into them is very very small.
Size? About average for FOR's, small compared with the Utah show birds. Smaller than the other German birds imported by Nelson. About the same as the Husband Tuffies.
Temperament is very tame towards humans and not as aggressive towards other Pigeons as are the Tuffies.
Colors: Kite, Bronze, Kite Mottle, Bronze Mottle, Classical Almond, Sprinkle, Deroy, Light Almond (Classical Almond Mottle), Sprinkle Mottle, Deroy Mottle, Black, Black Mottle, Recessive Red, Recessive Red Mottle, Recessive White and Pencil (could be homozygous Undergrizzle).

Re: Fehrholz Strain
BTW.. the Terry Rhodes hen was an Oriental Roller of the old family. But by now, most of that blood has been bred out. The Fehrholz strain that most of the club has is down from Andy Estrada, Bill Tietze, Dennis Radi and myself.
If anyone wants to know about these birds, don't listen to jealous gossip, write Bill Tietze himself. He is an OR icon on the order of Dale Husband. He is a wealth of knowledge and will tell you the truth straight up. He's the co-founder and honorary lifetime member of the FORS. His email address is in the newsletter.

Re: Fehrholz Strain
The only person I know of that has some 100% Fehrholz is Dennis. I heard that all of Bill's 100% birds were killed by a coon.I'm sure Andy probably still has some but good luck getting a hold of him. I'd bet there's non FORS members with them as well.Nothing wrong with the birds with the Rhodes cross in them though. It would be cool to have 100% Fehrholz though.

Re: Fehrholz Strain
You are right, there are some people that got Fehrholz birds from Andy that didn't pass through our hands. One of them was a board member of the old club but he has since died. I don't know who the others are though.
That reminds me, when I had that FOR German guy visit my home, he told me the current Fehrholz birds in Germany don't fly as high or roll as deep as our birds do. I am sure it has less to do with the Rhodes cross, and more to do with our preference for breeding. Dennis might have a lot to do with that. He likes highfliers, and all my birds came from Dennis.

Re: Fehrholz Strain
Andy said that when he told Mr.Fehrholz that his birds were flying high, long and rolling deep,Fehrholz said that he didn't get that kind of performance out of the birds.Feeding Technique, maybe? I give mine just about all they want and Dennis does the same and both our birds sky up.I gave a friend of mine A pair last year,he bred 4 squeaks this year and was flying them out of one of the portable boxes we built, they were doing good. We took them out yesterday and they were fed up more than usual and pinned out, gone.I've got 4 young ones learning in the other box now,we'll see how it goes.
