Re: Parakeets in the UK - Are they welcome?
There would appear to be no scientific evidence to confirm that Parakeets have a detrimental impact on other species or habitats. However, there seems to be a number of studies taking place and the outcome will be of interest to those of us living so close to a large and growing population. It is only over recent years that the Foots Cray Meadows population has grown to such a number that now many gardens in the Borough play host to these colourful additions to the local avifauna. Their range has also expanded way beyond the traditional sites within and outside the borough.
In the meadows the birds are clearly using holes that might have been used by starlings and woodpeckers but the latter still seem to be thriving and the former are struggling across their UK range so parakeets can be the problem.

Re: Parakeets in the UK - Are they welcome?
The main problem we have with them is that they dominate our bird feeders when in the garden and prevent small birds feeding. 20 plus is rather a lot at a time.

Re: Parakeets in the UK - Are they welcome?
I understand why some people would think the parakeets dominate but as Egret says if the other birds are still thriving I do really like to see the bright birds about...
