The pair of swans have 8 new cygnets on the lake today

Great news - the parents would have spent some 5 or 6 weeks incubating those eggs and 8 is probably the maximum to be expected, 5-8 being the norm. The parents will have responsibilty for the cygnets for another 17-21 weeks before they fully fledge and become totally independent.
That said, you'd have to be a real optimist to hope that all 8 will survive (there are some big fish in the lake!).
We shall watch their development with interest.

Also good to see lots swifts arriving over the past few days - usually amongst the last of the spring migrants to arrive and they'll be amongst the first to leave.
