Birds Of The Meadows.

Foots Cray Meadows is home to a wealth of wildlife of which birds are one of the largest groups.

I was interested in compiling a comprehensive list of all the birds that have been spotted there, whether residing or just visiting.

I didn't realise just how many different birds would there would be! By mainly using the Bexley RSPB website as a reference the list stands at:

Blackbird.
Blackcap.
Black Headed Gull.
Blue Tit.
Brambling.
Bullfinch.
Canada Goose.
Carrion Crow.
Chaffinch.
Chiffchaff.
Coal Tits.
Collared Dove.
Coot.
Cormorant.
Cuckoo.
Dunnock.
Fieldfare.
Gadwall.
Garden Warbler.
Goldcrest.
Goldfinch.
Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Great Tit.
Greenfinch.
Green Sandpiper.
Green Woodpecker.
Grey Heron.
Grey Wagtail.
House Sparrow.
Jackdaw.
Jay.
Kestrel.
Kingfisher.
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
Lesser Whitethroat.
Little Egret.
Little Grebe.
Long Tailed Tit.
Magpie.
Mallard.
Mistle Thrush.
Moorhen.
Mute Swan.
Pochard.
Nuthatch.
Redpoll.
Redwing.
Ring-necked Parakeet.
Robin.
Sand Martins.
Shoveler.
Siskin.
Song Thrush.
Sparrowhawk.
Spotted Flycatcher.
Starling.
Stock Dove
Tawny Owl.
Treecreeper.
Tree Pipit.
Tufted Duck.
Water Rail.
Willow Warbler.
Woodpigeon.
Wren.
Yellow Wagtail.

I'm hoping Ralph, one of our 2 Vice Chairmen, may be able to add to the list as he is much more knowledgable in the area than myself! emoticon

Here are a few photographs of some of my favourites:

As you may know, currently we are having a bird survey being carried out across the Meadows. It started on April and will conculde in December. It will then be good to compaire with old records - particularly Ralph's records.

Good Morning Mark - great to see you here. emoticon

It will be interesting to view the results of that survey, yes.

Let's hope we have some Swans back in the area by then!

Good morning Jane, glad to have you aboard!

It's still early days but I think this Message Board could become a useful tool for us all the share views and ideas.

Regarding the different species of birds on The Meadows Ralph informs me that "at least 120 species of bird have been recorded" there so I shall be adding to the list above at a later date.

Birds Of Prey.

A couple of photographs of the birds of prey that have been sighted on The Meadows.
Whenever I've seen a Kestrel hovering, scouring the ground whilst it seeks out a target, I've always been impressed by it's complete control & deadly focus.

The Kestrel is probably one of my favourite birds. I don't think I've ever seen a Sparrowhawk though (yet!).

Great pics there. Really liking that Kestrel in hover. Get plenty of them in my neck of the woods, waiting to swoop!

You are more likely to see Kestrel in the meadows, particularly the open areas - they will be hunting for small rodents. Sparrowhawks are very common now in Bexley, mainly gardens and woodland edge - they hunt by surprise thus need hedges etc. to use as cover before they pounce on their favourite prey - small birds. That is why gardens are a favourite feeding place, especially if there are feeders in the garden.

Hello there C! Glad you could join us on the message board.

If you're interested there's a nice image of a Kestrel down the page here: http://com3.runboard.com/bfootscraymeadows.f5.t14 that you're welcome to use as an avatar.

& that's some interesting information there Egret - but as much as I'd love to see a Sparrowhawk I'd also feel rather guilty about luring them to my garden to use as a hunting ground! emoticon

Would you be able to provide me with the names of some of the other birds that frequent The Meadows so I can update the list at the beginning of this topic?
