Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
Hi
Ok, so I noticed things have been slow around here. Probably my own fault I have many projects going on (did you see the site revamp? E-zine change?) so I am not here as often as I used to be. I think I just tend to read all the posts but rarely respond.
I am trying to make an effort here. My question is . . .
Are you out of the broomcloset or keeping the dust bunnies company? Meaning, are you open about your path as a Witch/Wiccan/Pagan or not. To what degree? How did you know you were comfortable enough coming out ?
I'll answer my own question, although it is kinda obvious. I am out, to family, friends and strangers who walk by and see my pentacle or goddess necklace. However, this wasn't always the case. It took many YEARS to be fully out of the broom closet. I didn't even tell my Grandma till after my first book Spellcraft for Teens was published. Coming out is not easy, I greatly admire people who are open. And also respect those who choose not to shout it from the roof tops.
Let me know all your thoughts ...

Re: Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
Mainly out. My parents and sisters know, as do my sweetie and his parents & sister. Some of my cousins know (as they are Pagan too), and I wear my pent out in the open. Some people at work know, most just haven't said anything.
My Gramma, most of my aunts & uncles, are in the dark. I wear my pent around them, but either they have no idea or it just doesn't come up.
Really, religion doesn't come up in regular conversation all that often. The people that know, know, and those that don't say anything... *shrug*
And then you get the woman in the check-out line who says "What a pretty star! Is that a Star of David?" Umm, yeah, something like that... *eyes roll*

Re: Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
Yes and no. My mother knows, although I'm still discrete about it. My alter is ontop of a bookshelf that I put in the empty half of my closet so I can either open up that side of the closet's doors or walk through the other half of my closet to get to it. I fastened some fabric to the ceiling to divide it from the section my clothes are in. So it kinda has a "room" of it's own. (I should post pictures or something..lol..it's kinda hilarious.)I suppose I give a whole new meaning to the term "closet-Pagan" since I tend to worship and pray in one! My mother knows it's there, but I still prefer to keep it out of sight. That way it can always remain set up and people who come into my room won't think I'm a homicidal maniac (You should see the blade of my athame 0_o.) It works for me. It might not for some people. My boyfriend is also Pagan so he knows. Another close friend of mine knows too and of coarse the study group I'm a part of. But as for everyone else, they are either completely left in the dark about my religion or are beginning to figure it out on their own from some of the jewlery I wear or by the books that are left lying around my room...
I find it interesting to hear other people's experiences when dealing with this topic though ^_^ I hope more people share.

I declared myself
I just declared myself as a wiccan, but I havent told anyone yet. One girl at my college knows I'm interested, because she saw my books. That's about it. if I tell my family, there's going to be a lot of controversy, so I think for me it's best not to say anything yet. My dad bought me some books, and jokes about "R u a witch or something?" I just smile, and say just interested. The way he acts now, I wouldn't tell him that I am ... not just yet.
My friends know I'm interested in witchcraft and tarot cards, and I've done spells, but I don't think they understand that I call myself a wiccan now. I'm very happy for myself. : )

Ravenstorm,
I think you've been handling yourself very well as a matter of fact. Coming out to family seems to be the hardest part. Just wait till your ready and you know when that time comes.
Atleast your dad is supportive and buys you the books your interested in. Some young people just don't have that.
Hope you enjoy your stay around here. Its good to see new faces ... or names .. or well you know what I mean.

Re: Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
I'm really lucky because my parents know what i'm interested in. I let them read what i'm reading, see what i'm looking at on the computer, so there's a big trust factor that we have.
My mum and dad also buy me books about paganism and wicca.
My sisters know also. I haven't really declared myself as anythign because i'm on the very start of a journey, so they don't think i'm wiccan or pagan, just interested in it. I wish one of my sisters didn't know because every noe and again she goes on one of her strides, complains about the music i listen to, and says i should stop being dull, and taht i'm weird for having statues of bast in my bedroom. But i'm okay with that. I'm pretty happy with how it is now.
I think the best thing to do is when you start studying wicca, like i did, just tell your mum and dad about it. although most of the time its hard for people to do that.

Re: Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
If I am asked a question concerning my spirituality then I'll take the time and give a brief overview of what it's all about.
I was once much more out spoken concerning my path, taking an active role and many a time trying to inform and correct the many misconceptions out there..
I definately don't shout it out from the highest rooftop, lol, but neither am I locked up in some dusty broom closet.
Ex. I live in a dorm with 3 roommates and I have an altar setup openly on a shelf..and I do my daily devotions at the altar. My roommates see the elemetal objects along with pictures of nature. They seen me meditate under a tree just outside my window. And they once asked, "are you some kinda witch or something?" Then I gently explained what I was doing and why. With that understanding they were ok and totally respect what I do.
I don't go around preaching to everyone on campus though.. there are some zealous Christian students out here and I'd rather not get involved a theological dispute about my spirituality. I've been there and done that and it's just messy. I'd rather use my energy for something more productive, lol..
Well, blessing of Love, Joy, and Truth..

Re: Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
most of my friends know, my parents know and are really supportive. none of my grandparents know though, which bugs me cause im pretty close to them all. i wanna tell them, but one of my grandmas is ultra-christian, and im scared shell freak. i wear my pent in public and i sleep ina shirt that has a pentacle on it, so im pretty open about it. if someone asks and i know they wont like it then i kinda avoid the question, which i am trying not to do anymore. if i know theyll be fine with it then i tell them straight out.quote: Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.

Re: Out of the Broomcloset or In ?
Hello...
Sort of both. My best friend, boyfriend, and his family know (his mom and sister are also Wiccan.) My family... yeah right. I'm 25 and scared to death to tell them. In fact, when I told my dad that my boyfriend's sister named her kitten that my parents gave her "Wicca", his response was (insert heavy sigh and eye roll here) "Oh, geez!"
Apparently, it's better to be a non-practicing protestant in my family than anything else. Heck, my grandpa almost had a fit when he found out I voted democrat.
Blessed be,
