Re: how does tarot work?
Tarot cards can be used for meditation and in spells, but their main use is divination.
Each tarot card has a different meaning and they are layed out in spreads. Where the card is in the spread changes it's meaning in that reading.
I don't know if that made sense lol but there are more experienced tarot readers on here that could answer you're question more fully .

Re: how does tarot work?
Okay, I am not a tarot expert, trust me. But I do know how they work. Its a method of divination that enables the reader to connect to their intuition and divine energies to help a person figure out a possiable future. Once people know what their potential future is than they have the chance to work to change it for the better.
Anyone else please feel free to add or disagree.

Re: how does tarot work?
Ave,
I would like to add that although these days tarot is made famous for its use in divination, this is *NOT* the main use of the cards. Tarots main use is found in qabalah. The minor cards, ace-10, king, queen, knight, princess, relate to the sephiroth. the major cards, 0-21, relate the the 22 paths that connect the sephiroth. while the cards can be used as divination, the key is that the cards are symbolic of universal forces. This is one of the reasons I pushed for qabalah to be used more in wicca

Re: how does tarot work?
Tarot cards are used for many different purposes. As stated above, they are used in spellwork, meditation but mainly (at least in todays Pagan society) for divination. Tarot works by the reader interpreting the cards in accordance to their position and order of appearance. Most (if not all) tarot readers own serveral books on the topic, which teaches you how to interpret the cards. I personally do not believe in this. I believe that the tarot interpretations should come from the heart, ones own subconscious, not a book. What happens if I do a reading for John Doe today, and he has a certain spread with a certain outcome, and next week I do a reading for Jane Doe, with the same spread and she gets the same outcome? Does that mean that her destiny/fate is the same as John's? No. So I do not read from a book. Books are a good place to start, but I ultimately use them for references. I use my heart and soul to read the cards. The Goddess gives me the interpretations as She sees fit. Not as a book says.
