State of The Game: Melee Characters

http://www.guildwars.com/competitive/articles/stateofthegame/20070326-meleeprofessions.php

A brief synopsis, but I especially like their version fo the Melandru Derv that they have listed.

I looked at that build yesterday, I thought it looked like something that could be effective for us. I ran something pretty similar for a while, then started changing it up to get used to others, but overall it was quite effective. I believe it is basically how I have my hero derv setup right now.

I have looked it over a few times, and I do think it beats the one I came up with.

It has both a speed boost and a cripple, and still has plenty of damage. I'll put it into GWFreaks and change my build post to reflect the new build.

Ran this in Zaishan's Challenge, last night
it did fairly well against all groups
Ranger Traps gave me issues, but
not till after all my hero's had died.
  Might consider faithful intervention instead
of wearying strike, although good damage
that weakness afterwards did hurt some.

You would not want to use Wearying Strike unless you have the Avatar up. While you do however, it is the most effective attack skill on the bar for the energy.

You'll also be much more likely to get the bonus damage from Chilling Victory while in Form.

Definitely saw that when playing last night.
Will have to put Wearying Strike outside
my normal reach, or I will trigger it just
because I am looking for a skill that is
recharged emoticon Die Dirt Bag , hoo rah
Would have been a marine, but seemed to be too much work, much better to exercise when I feel like it and sit behind a desk ....
  much safer also ;-)

I've been guilty of the same myself, no matter what build it is that I'm playing. If it's recharged, then I must have used it before, right? And if I used it before, it must be good, so... Use it again! regardless of the circumstances...
*uses spell interrupt on a melee attack*

Re: State of The Game: Melee Characters

Oh yes. I've been using the Avatar of Melandru + Wearying Strike in PvE for quite a while now. When playing a PvE dervish, it's an easy combo to set up early in the game as these are skills that are available to you early in the campaign. It's quite an effective combo. The only problem is the nasty 25 energy cost for Avatar of Melandru. You get the slightest amount of death penalty and you can't use it anymore because your max energy is lower than the energy cost. To counter it, you'll need to either put the "I have the power!" insignia on your scythe (which doesn't really give you that much more energy), or bring a +energy staff to switch to just for changing form (which is also something I've been doing in PvE). I would think that switching out to a staff in PvP would be rather difficult, though... as PvP is so much more fast paced than PvE.

I guess you could also go for radiant insignias and/or runes of attunement in your armor... but I prefer +armor insignias (since it's a melee class) and runes that boost your skills. However, Avatar of Melandru is such a cool skill it may very well be worth the sacrifice.

The energy cost is high ...
I have done just as you mention,
  going with radiant armour
 +2 energy runes
with minor's for Scythe, and Myst
 +5 energy on weapon

If I remember correctly, you can take two
deaths before you dont have the energy to
get to form. energy is ~49

I would also try what Bill said and bring along a staff for another +10 energy. Sure weapon swapping isn't "natural" but it will come to you in time.
