monking and 'twitch' skills

Just wondering how the more accomplished monks out there do there monking.
I'm specifically referring to keyboard setup and what you use the mouse for vs what you use keys for?

I'd really like to improve the twich factor in my monking. I feel that I may be doing too much mousework, which slows me down.

My normal play setup for GW is to use my nostromo n52 controller and the mouse, and my fingers rarely touch the keyboard. But this setup doesn't seem to work too well for monking.

Any hints, tips? Or do I just need to learn to move the mouse quicker?

Re: monking and 'twich' skills

I go Mouse and Keyboard myself. Typically I move around via mouse. I know some people have told me that's not choice because it makes it harder to do things like "Arrow Dance"... but you know, I've never actually seen anyone dodge an attack by arrow dancing on purpose. emoticon At least in my own Ranger experience. And I can manage a fair version of it with a mouse anyway.

Typically I keep my left hand, my keyboard hand High, so my pinky is on the 1 over my keyboard, ring is on 2, middle three, index four, and thumb over the spacebar. So all my important, need to be used normally skills are 1-4. I don't use the keypad so I can keep my thumb near the spacebar.

Because, that way, it's easier for me to follow the group. I'm not blazing trails myself. When someone calls "Push forward!" or "Retreat!" I just click a name and hit the spacebar. Usually one of the midline like Ranger or Mesmer so I don't get in trouble following warriors, by accident.

Other than that, I just rely on quick mouse movements to switch targets for healing. Only time I'm not quick enough with it is when someone is spiked in like 0.2 seconds. But then again, who is that fast?

I use the mouse for almost everything except moving. I am left handed so I use my right hand on the WASD keys and use the XCV and SPACE off of this hand. As you can see I have my screen laid out for monking with the skill bar and red bars next to each other. Also the conditions maintained is just to the left of the skill bar with the conditions on me being just about the targetted bar.

I keep frequently used skills in the 123 slot and will throw these fast casting skills on a spike. If there is a need for energy managment skills I keep these at the bottom. The 4 slot is really for anythign that I rarely use.

The nice thing about this is I can see everything I need to for monking in one concise area. Then the view of the field is wide open on the left hand side of the screen. This is really useful for spotting the Sin that just ported in or that searing flames that is underway.

As far as dodging arrows. No if there is one target that is hammering me intermittently then very infrequently am I able to dodge. However, like when we went up against the Paragon team I was able to dodge a fair amount of damage by running around when targetted. Only stopping to reapply Gaurdian or RoF.

I don't know if I count as an "accomplished" monk, but I can offer a bit of advice with the n52.

I mouse to click teammates and to turn my PoV- that's it. I never touch my keyboard in a match. All of my skill selections are made via the n52. My pad is actually set up for target calling, but it works well for twitch monking as well.

buttons 1-5=
skill 4, 3, 2, 1, "T"

buttons 6-10=
skill 8, 7, 6, 5, "Space"

buttons 11-14
Push to talk, closest target, CTRL, next target

Now... this is ideal for me. I've often thought abotu trying to work team member targetting onto the n52, but I'd need more buttons. I like being able to select my skills off of there. If I wanted to be able to target teammates as well, I'd either need 16 buttons to work with, or use the shift key on the n52 which would make things a bit difficult for me.

Anyway, that's how I do it. Take it for what it's worth.

I'm pretty sure Pyx uses an n52 also, so he may have some more valuable insight for ya'.

I've moved everything over to the right side of the screen.
I use buttons 2-5 for skills 1-4 and buttons 7-10 for skills 5-8. I just find trying to hit the 1 and 5 key are not good for twitch skills. I generally have my pinky finger on the side of the Nostromo and use 3 fingers for these 8 keys.

I have moved my skill, health, and Mana bar to the top of the screen and enlarged them so I can check them at a glance, also setup the skill bar to match the 2 row configuration I use with the Nostromo.

Generally for all games I play, I just use those 8 buttons for important skills. If I need more buttons, I use different shift keys in combination with them. The other buttons feel awkward to reach for. I use them, but not for anything that requires a fast response.

I can E-mail anyone my config if they like, just send me a message at pyxisofargo@hotmail.com

EDIT: I should mention that my mouse is a MX518 and I have the 2 thumb buttons set to next and previous target. Rest of buttons are set to default. I use to have a self target there but use these mainly in Arena for calling targets and scanning through what I am up against to see if I need Holy Veil up or not.

Also button 14 on the Nostromo is my Push to Talk key because I couldn't make my middle mouse button for some reason, that is what I usually use if I can.

Re: monking and 'twich' skills

Well, I've been doing a lot of practice monking in RA. So far, I think Keith's setup with the skillbar right next to the party window is best for me.

Switching around the n52 keys just messes my head up. I've had it setup for so long, for basically an offensive config, that I can't change it now. Just can't seem to get used to a different key combo.

BTW, the more monking I do, the more I like it. Very difficult to do well, but very rewarding when done well.

If our 'regular' monks want to switch up during GvG, I'd be happy to fill the spot. Although I'd probably still prefer them there, just for the sake of our team.
Especially since I haven't cured my spamming/over-healing issues. emoticon

If you are going to be clicking the skill bar for casting I don't think you can do any better than what Keith has setup there.
