Open letter to ANet thread on GW Guru draws praise and much /sign-age

So I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this lengthy post.

http://guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10297855

Here are some quoted paragraphs.

quote:

Which one of you thought it was a good idea to throw this out the window with super-powered, no-attribute skills? Who was in the room when this suggestion was thrown out and thought this was a good idea? Who was in this room that allowed this to happen? Do you listen when people speak, at all? Can you even imagine how radical a change is this is to your entire game design?

There were also terse comments about Ursan and its wrecking of PvE.

quote:

This trend of development was really continued by your splitting of PvE and PvP. You knew the PvP playerbase was shrinking. You cut off support for it, and the top left. Then you allowed HA to fall apart, the entryway for new players into GvG, and the bottom shriveled. The rest stagnated. You split the style of play from PvE and PvP, so that no longer did enemies generally resemble what players might use: instead, you gave us Enraged and Anor mobs. Then, you split the skills of the game so that even if a new player wanted to get into PvP, they would have to first relearn the game. What does it say to new players, that you are knowingly strangling an entire section of your most committed fanbase in order to provide changes for the new players? While some might be thrilled at the kindness towards them, anyone who looks pasts that realizes that you, ANet, not only do not care about the veteran players or the game itself, but are willing to allow parts of it to die in order to pursue profit.

quote:

I think you know this too, because you are doing a huge amount to keep your old playerbase within the franchise – the Hall of Monuments is a way of saying ‘please come play Guild Wars 2, we’ll give you benefits if you do!’ You’re bribing your old playerbase to stay with you, and that’s not a problem at all, but not everyone will stay with you in the jump.

Thoughts? More sign-age?

Is there a crying smiley? Because those two letters deserve big ones.

I agree that Guild Wars was this really amazing game when it came out and a lot of that luster is gone now. But it's definitely not the drab picture those two posts make it seem. I mean, when the game first came out, they were saying "Levels don't matter!" but, even then, that was a load of crap. If nothing else, you have more HP when you are level 20 than level 1. When GW first came out, there was no way to tell what skill players / monsters were using. You had to identify them because every skill had a unique animation, effect, and sound. Maybe that just wasn't a good way to play.
First of all, it's a video game. If you don't like it, don't play it. Especially since GW doesn't even have a monthly fee. Just walk away. They are talking about it like it is the most important thing in their lives. I get that we've all invested a lot of time into our characters and we get attached to them, but, really, expecting any game to be the same game you fell in love with after 3 years is unreasonable. Your standards change, the industry changes, and, if any game wants to stay in the market, the game itself changes.

Secondly, look at the stuff they are saying:
quote:

I beat the campaign portion of the game with two friends and 5 heroes eleven hours after the game's release. Here come my first questions...

quote:

(Destroyers) just die. You can survive an unlimited amount of them, and it's not even a challenge...

quote:

4. Why is it completely impossible to fail a dungeon?

quote:

5. Why, in the hardcore expansion boasting specifically high end content, is there only one elite dungeon out of eighteen, and why is it not any harder than the other dungeons?
I called and got one of my friends out of bed to hop on and give it a try with me, and an hour and half and later we had beaten three out of the four bosses leading up to Duncan and had stopped caring...

quote:

6. Why are Destroyer weapons so woefully easy to acquire?

There is nothing in either of those posts that leads me to believe these people know what the outdoors looks like. Want to enjoy your video games more? Log out every once in awhile. Stop grinding. Go for a walk. Seriously, these guys play GW way too much. And I think that alone is a problem.

People that have bought the game and play a lot over a long time, cost server maintainence.

People that buy the game, play off and on, and recomend it to their friends make the company profit.

Which makes more sense to focus on?

I have used Ursan a few times and felt like I was cheating the entire time I was doing it. That one skill above all others really simplifies the game down to hit 1, hit 2, hit 1, hit 3. Don't get me wrong, the skill has its uses and I will use it in the future when I feel it necessary. I do find it funny when I join up in a group and there is an Ursan Ele.

Not sure I really agree with the rest of the stuff. I still enjoy PvE, but then I either play with Guildies/Alliance mates or H/H parties. I do not play all that much in PvP anymore, but then it is still with the same group of people (and Ursan is not available there).
