Salvage or sell?
In today's game, I would like to know your opinion on salvaging an item versus selling it. With the sole purpose of gaining cash, is it better to sell the majority of items, or salvage them for raw materials, and then sell off those materials?
Is there a cut-off value?
For example: I find a white bow. I can either sell it for 40 gold, or salvage and get a few planks of wood. Which is the better cash gaining route?

Re: Salvage or sell?
Good question. Having just started to play again I'm also curious. Since I'm bringing up a new character I'm also curious how many of each raw material is good to have stored for crafting armor/weps. Is there a number you guys use as a standard?

Re: Salvage or sell?
I can't remember the last time I salvaged something.
If there is any difference, I think it's marginal. Unless you're salvaging something that can potentially yield a very rare material. But I can't keep track of what yields what, so I just sell it all.

I try to keep my Materials tab in the Chest at 250 for all the common items.
With all my characters helping, that is not usually too hard.

Re: Salvage or sell?
I just sell. Common mats are cheap, so, if it happens that I do not have enough cloth / leather (cloth, maybe, leather, not so much), I'll buy it.
FYI, I have read that identifying "high level" whites can help bring in a good deal of money. I don't know what high level whites are, but I have been testing it on and off for awhile. Sometimes you'll notice a big increase, sometimes not so much.

Re: Salvage or sell?
I ID everything but weapons, and generally its worth the cost of the ID kit to do so. I don't salvage unless I want specific material, you can see what salvages into what on the wiki.
You may get lucky and salvage something valueable to offset the cost of the kits, but I think overall its just another gold sink like chests.

Re: Salvage or sell?
Depends on the item in question.
For example, healing focuses (The base skin), salvage for Granite. Usually I can only merchant those focuses for about 12-30 gold. However, if I salvage for ten granite (Usually will get 4-6 on a salvage), I can usually sell the Granite off for 90-100. Which more than covers the cost of the kit uses.
Especially if you buy Expert Kits. Superior Kits are a waste of money as you pay more gold per use, and Normal Kits don't get as many materials (Even common ones) as Experts.
The materials I've been keeping an eye out for right now is Granite, Feathers, Scales, and Chitin, all seem to sell pretty well never dipping below 70 in price.
The ones I wouldn't bother with would be tanned hides, bolts of cloth, bones, and wood planks. Those are always at 30... 40 if you're lucky.
Material wise though my biggest cash cow was always Bolts of Silk. Considering about 80% of the enemies in game are casters you get a lot of cloth armor, and pretty much universally you get Silk out of it (I get about 40% odds of 1-3 Bolts of Silk, 60% of 4-10 bolts of cloth). Silk isn't the most expensive resource but it's common as hell and as a "Rare" it seems never to be below 125 or so a bolt.

Re: Salvage or sell?
I ID everything before I sell it. I find that IDing high level white weapons usually adds about 30 gold to the sell price.
I thought that the superior salvage kits gave bonuses to salvaging, such as saving the item you pull a rune off, or giving more of or rarer salvage. After a quick look at wiki, it appears there is no difference.
Not that it matters much to me, I very rarely use salvage kits.

Re: Salvage or sell?
My own method, which may not be efficient at all...
Salavage until you have 250 in your mat storage of the majority of commons. Then salvage only what may yield a more valuable rare.
Otherwise, I ID most max whites, salvage only when I need to rebuild my buffer in storage, and sell the rest outright to the merchant.
A side note... if you get a "Highly Salvageable" inscription on something, it can be salavged off and put onto another item with a better rare yield, to increase your long term profits. For instance, if you have a highly salvageable wooden longbow, which will yield only wood planks, you can salvage the inscription off of that and put it onto another inscribable item to get more of whatever particular material the new item salvages for.

Re: Salvage or sell?
I usually keep 250 commons in the Material Storage, and another stack of 250 common materials in the IV storage tab.
Because when you get up to 15 K armors 250 alone is usually not enough. Also with as often as I delete and recreate characters due to Survivor Title deaths I go through a lot of "Basic" armor that only uses common materials. ^^;;
