Re: Warrior without a cause. Need advice.
Yeah, 2-handed weapons will always do more damage, but of course with those you lose the defense bonus of a shield. I guess it depends on what role I want to play in groups and/or the guild; I could be a major damage dealer and drop drop tactics in favor of strength, or I could stick with sword and shield and be a tank, letting groups wail on me while my teammates do the damage.
Actually I enjoy playing both types; it's nice to do major damage, but it's also fun to be surrounded by a group of baddies and come out relatively unscathed thanks to my tactics skills and my shield.

I'm not sure if I am understanding you correctly, but just in case... you can use a shield with an axe.

I was thinking primarily of using a 2-handed axe. Those do more damage than 1-handers, right? Or do those even exist? I could have sworn I saw a 2-handed axe once. Maybe I'm confusing it with the hammer.

Nope, no two-handed axes that I've ever sen or heard of.
Someone remind me of exactly how much more damage a player without a shield takes vs. one with a shield? Was it 30% more?

Depends on the AL that the shield offers and I remember reading a post on gwGuru that said the direction you are being hit from also makes a difference.

Re: Warrior without a cause. Need advice.
A 16 AL shield will offer roughly 15% damage reduction on Warrior armour if he was to take elemental damage, 11% if it was physical, (and 23% on someone wearing caster standard 60AL).
That doesn't include the set damage reduction i.e. -2

Re: Warrior without a cause. Need advice.
After using a 2-handed hammer for awhile I could definitely tell I was taking more damage than I did when I used a shield, but fortunately I made up for it by killing enemies faster. I'm definitely not as well-equipped to tank an entire mob, though; I go down a lot quicker versus multiple attackers unless I've got a good monk behind me.
