Shadows Ranger Critique - General Barrage/Disruptor
Hey Guildies!
I thought I would post my current Ranger/Monk build as I’m always looking for a way to improve the character. Unlike a lot of you, I really haven’t felt the need to switch characters, and spent most of my time exploring the PvE content. I guess since I only really use one character, I want to do my part as well as I can.
General Anti-caster/Barragebot Build
PvE Skills:
1) Tiger’s Fury
2) Barrage (Elite)
3) Distracting Shot
4) Choking Gas
5) Throw Dirt
6) Storm Chaser (or Whirling Defense) - Depends if there is more exploring or standing and fighting
7) Troll Unguent
8) Rebirth
PvP Build:
1) Tiger’s Fury
2) Poison Arrow/Melandru’s Arrows (Elites) - Depends on other rangers in group
3) Distracting Shot
4) Whirling Defense
5) Throw Dirt
6) Barbed Trap
7) Troll Unguent
8) Resurrect Signet
Stats + Runes:
Beast Mastery: 3+1 (4)
Expertise: 8+1 (9)
Wilderness Survival: 11+2 (13)
Marksmanship: 11+2 (13)
Major Vigor Rune - Still trying to get Superior through faction points
Armor:
Status 15k Druid - 32 Mana/70 Rating
Weapons:
Fiery Max Longbow - Long range luring
Cold Max Short bow - Short range fast-damage
Status – Ebon Storm bow (Max -1) - Looks good in pictures
+10 Energy Smiting Rod - For fast cycling of traps or rebirth
Strategy PvE:
1) Always go after the spell-casters first and use “Tiger + Choking Gas” for groups or “Tiger+Distracting Shot” for individuals. Generally, I initially ignore calls unless they are specifically casters, and then follow target for clean-up.
2)“Tiger+Barrage” any large group of monsters, particularly if they are casters.
3)If I see a squishy getting attacked, particularly with large groups, use “Throw Dirt” to give them some breathing room. Resume following targets or continue helping squishy depending on situation.
4)If I am close enough to the action and there is a large group use “Throw Dirt” for additional help.
5)If I am getting attacked, and am low on HP, use “Whirling Defense/Storm Chaser + Blind”
Be gentle with the critiques, and don't be surprised if I ask more questions as a result!

Re: Shadows Ranger Critique - General Barrage/Disruptor
That looks like some good stuff to me! My PvE ranger changes almost from mission to mission depending on what we're doing...but the skills you listed are often in my PvE lineup. I've found that poison arrow works great too, especially down in sorrow's furnace with all the nice squishy stone summit and dregdes that are down there!
For PvP, that's almost exactly what I tend to run in the random and team arenas with my ranger. I usually have frozen soil in place of where you have tigers fury, but that's just a personal preference (use frozen soil with care!)...I can certainly see benefits to having tigers fury.

Re: Shadows Ranger Critique - General Barrage/Disruptor
Sorry Jl, I should have given credit where credit is due....
My PvP is definately influenced due to conversation we had during our 4v4 PvP ranger group run... Paticularly the "Barbed Trap" and "Whirling Defense".... Although, I was new to "Whirling Defense" and forgot to use it in a bind.
So thanks for the help there if I didn't express it before.

Re: Shadows Ranger Critique - General Barrage/Disruptor
No credit necessary...I probably got half my PvP build from Greentongue originally! That's the great thing about having so many skills...you can start with an idea, then tweak it and make it your own!

Should I swap out a skill?
Ok... I have my first major complaint about Tiger's Fury... The eight second disable to all non-attack skills ended up killing me many times last night...
(Besides lack of Skillz...)
Others: "Oh look - someone is plinking me with Tiger's fury - I'd better go pay attention"
Me: "4 seconds..... 3 seconds..... 2 seconds...."
Not to mention I always forget to cast "whirling" defense thats sitting on my skill bar....
On the serious note... Since I am currently a Ra/Mo here (Not using any Monk skills) is there a better healing skill I should use with no points invested in Monkage? I can spam Reveral-of-Forture endlessly (5 MP, 8 Seconds longs, 5 Sec recharge) but didn't know how it would work out in PvP. Troll Uguent just seems to take forever and gets everyones attention.....

Re: Should I swap out a skill?
Without spending any points in healing or protection it might be hard to get a heal with the huge power of troll ungent.
The trick with using troll ungent is to know when to throw it up...usually BEFORE you start getting attacked. If you wait until your life is running low its probably too late, and an interrupt will result in death. I like to use ungent before running into a dangerous place...or if I see a warrior coming my way I'll blind him with throw dirt, then put down a barbed trap, then use troll ungent (even at full health) before I start attacking him. Whirling Defense is also great in conjuntion with troll ungent, because if you're taking damage you can hit whirling D, then put on troll ungent...chances are you'll be back at full health and have a +8 regen by the time they start landing hits again.
Remember that the energy cost of troll ungent is quite low, and the recharge time is pretty quick, so you can use it whenever there's a lull in the battle. Even if you don't need it at the time it'll be good to have up in case you become the next target.

Re: Shadows Ranger Critique - General Barrage/Disruptor
Thanks for the feedback Jamie...
The timing of Troll Ugent sounds like a good plan, and it was something I already knew but didn't practice. It sounds like I need to jettison the Tiger's Fury till I get the timing of throwing Troll Ugent before spamming TF.
Your Shock-ranger seems like a really good idea for PvP and I'm going to play around with it. With it at least:
1) I'll always have all my skills available - defensive or otherwise
2) I'm actually using a secondary to a damage benefit
