Ranger advice

My next toon is going to be a ranger, as this type of character has always been something I have loved to play as much as a healer. Any advice on a pvp build? I really like the idea of the shocking ranger/ elem one mentioned by Jl Rangerguy.

I haven't noticed too many people playing with pets. Are they not good for pvp? Seems to me like using them would take up a lot of spaces in the skill hotbar.

Any advice from you guys would be appreciated. Image

Re: Ranger advice

Well, there's several that I've tried with varying degrees of success.

I've had a lot of fun with a degen ranger/mez (poison arrow, conjure phantasm, and hunters shot)
Works great in arenas, not so good in tombs or GvG since you'll usually run into a prot monk on the larger arranged teams who will 'mend' all your poison away.

Another fun build is using echo with debilitating shot for an energy drain denial build. Works great if you have another partner (like a shutdown mez) to help out. Not as effective if you're the only shutdown person in the group.

A quickshot damage ranger can be powerful, but it takes some practice to get the hang of it to get the timing right.

A trapping ranger is fun too. You'd be suprised how many people will ignore you in the heat of battle as you walk right up to them and lay down a trap.
It's also great for stopping/slowing 'gank' groups in GvG.

Also, the one skill I always bring when playing a ranger (other than rez sig) is whirling defense. One of the best personal defense spells IMO.

Lanoni, if you're interested in the specifics for any of these builds, let me know, and I'll dig it up and post it.

Re: Ranger advice

Here's the basic framework I use:

Class: Ranger / Mesmer

Assumed items:
   +1 to Expertise
   +2 to Marksmanship
   +3 to Wilderness Survival

Attributes: (cost)
   Expertise: 8+1 (37)
   Marksmanship: 10+2 (61)
   Wilderness Survival: 12+3 (97)
   Inspiration Magic: 2 (3)

   Total attribute points used: 198/200

Skills:
1) Elite: You could put Spike trap here, but I don't really like to use it, especially since barbed trap does crippling as well. Better off taking something like poison arrow or melandru's arrows for your elite since you already have the high wilderness survival.
2) Barbed Trap - (15,2,20) When Barbed Trap is triggered, all foes in the area take 65 piercing damage and become crippled and bleeding for 26 seconds. Barbed Trap ends after 90 seconds. While activating this skill, you are easily interrupted.
3) Flame Trap - (10,2,20) When Flame Trap is triggered, for 3 seconds all foes in the area are struck for 30 fire damage and set on fire for 3 seconds. Flame Trap automatically triggers after 90 seconds. While activating this skill, you are easily interrupted.
4) Dust Trap - (25,2,30) When Dust Trap is triggered, all foes in the area are Blinded for 11 seconds and take 68 earth damage. While activating this skill you are easily interrupted. Dust Trap ends after 90 seconds.
5) Whirling Defense - (10,0,60) For 16 seconds, you have 75% chance to block attacks. Whenever you block an arrow this way, adjacent foes take 9 piercing damage.
6) Mantra of Concentration - (5,0,20) For 76 seconds, the next time you would be interrupted while performing a skill, you are not interrupted.
7) Rez sig
8) open slot

The whirling and mantra are used to avoid interrupts while trapping in battle.
In the open slot you could put another evasion skill if you wanted, or possibly something like healing spring which can be useful in the middle of melee.

Also you can re-work the attrib points to put more in expertise if you feel that energy becomes an issue. I just like to make sure I have 12 points in marksmanship because I hate doing less than 100% damage (just a pet peeve of mine)

Also, when playing our GvG map, when the battle starts, hit skip immediately to skip the cinematic. Then run out to the teleporter and lay all your traps. By the time the countdown is done, they should be almost recharged, and you can plant more in the path on the way to our guild lord.
Should be enough to slow down any gankers.
