R/E Shocking Barrage

Here's build that's working out pretty well for me so far:

Expertise 10, +3 rune, +1 mask
Marksmanship 11, +2 rune
Air 10
Wilderness 1, +1 rune

Skills (for generic PvE):
Hunters shot
Distracting shot
Barrage
Pin Down
Conjure Lightning
Troll Ungent
Whirling Defense
Res Signet

For random PvP I'll generally ditch the res signet and sometimes troll ungent, and bring in throw dirt and a trap.

This works pretty well for single targets or crowd control...just use conjure lightning (with a shocking bow), and spam barrage, + hunters shot and pin down when appropriate. Whirling defense goes up when the mob gets too close for comfort. If you travel with a good healer (I generally roll with Alesia lately) then you could probably drop troll ungent and res signet all together.

I like this build. This is generally where I am heading with my Ranger as well. I am toying with the idea of putting in Tiger Fury, with leftover points, and a minor in Beast Mastery. Have you tried that? If so...to what effect?

Re: R/E Shocking Barrage

I've played with Tiger's fury a little bit, and it seems to be useful in certain cases...probably more for PvP than PvE.

My major problem with it is that is doesn't last very long at all with only a couple points in beast mastery, and I don't want to spend more there because its really the only beast mastery skill that I use. Seeing as how I am too lazy to cast it every 5 seconds in PvE, I don't use it much.

However, I can see a big benefit to using it in PvP. Put all your extra points into Beast mastery (after filling out the others per this build...0 in wilderness in this case), get a nice shocking short bow, cast conjure lightening, then tiger's fury, then spam barrage at a group of enemies. That should give you a very fast rate of fire with some pretty good crowd control damage. I may have to try that during our next GvG!

Taking your idea and modifying it for PvP...
(Of course it is not a Shocking Barrage anymore but a Shocking Poisoner) emoticon

Of course this would have to be played with a Shocking Bow...

Conjure Lighting
Poison Shot
Distracting Shot
Lightning Strike
Whirling Defense
Throw Dirt
Troll Ugent
Resurrect Signet

Battle Plan:
Mash keys until I win!
 emoticon

Let me know what you think... Better to have my feelings hurt here than have 12-year-old messinging "pwned" over my dead character...

Well, I don't know how you're attributes are spread out, but I'm not so sure about the lightning strike.

I would probably prefer something penetrating attack in it's place.

But again, it would depend how the points are distributed.

Andovar - Thanks for the reply.....

The lightning strike itself has 25% armor penetration, or were you refering to the Conjure lightning?

Lightning Strike
5 MP - 1s Cast - 0s Duration - 5s Recharge
5-50 Damage
25% Armor Penetration

Conjure Lightning
10 MP - 1s Cast - 60s Duration - 60s Recharge
Add 1-16 with lightning based weapons

For attributes I was simply going to use the same general combination as Jl Rangerguys:
Expertise 10
Marksmanship 11
Air 10
Wilderness 1

Lightning Strike is the only one that I would probably switch out and try different things with as well. You may end up going with Lightning Strike in the end, but its a good one to switch out and see what else works.

I would consider Penetrating Attack as Andovar recommended, Also from the Air line you could try out Shock or Gail. Shock would be completely for defensive purposes, may give you an second or 2 extra to get Troll Unguent off. Gail, for the long range knock down. Gail definitely comes in handy in the Arena against runners.

Duel Shot is also good as the Conjure bonus is not effected by the 25% damage reduction on that skill, each arrow will still get full conjure damage.

Has anybody tried out Conjure Lightning with Thunderclap? Wonder if regular (Conjured) Arrow Attacks would cause the knockdown effect.

Re: R/E Shocking Barrage

Actually from the listing I read, the lightning strike is only 5-41.
At 10 air, I'm guessing about 35 damage plus the 25% armor pen.

With penetrating attack you get +3-15 to your attack plus 20% armor pen. So probably +13 at 11 marks (although you should really get it up to at least 12 so you're doing full damage)
Now your bow does 15-28, so lets just assume 22 avg damage. Now you add in the 20% for customization and +15% for the inherent bonus (health > 50%, while enchanted, or whatever). This will boost the avg damage to about 30. Add in the +13 for the pen attack bonus and you're at 43.
(Val will probably rip me a new one for my math, but I'm just assuming that the percentages stack.)

Not to mention you always have the chance to do a critical hit with an attack, in which case you'll be doing a crapload of damage.
Unlike the lightning strike which is just static.

Oh yeah, forgot to add in the conjure lightning bonus too.

Plus the pen attack has a shorter cooldown (3 secs).
Now it will cost you slightly more at 10 expertise (6 energy). But if you get the expertise up to 12 it's only 5 energy, and at 14 it's a mere 4 energy.

...just my 2 cents. emoticon

I'm also a big fan of gale. Not only is it great for stopping runners, it can help you defensively when some warriors come after you. It's always on my skill bar when I'm playing an air spike ele.

Actually the knockdown should work even without conjure since you're using a shocking bow.

My question is, has anyone used thunderclap at all? It just seems like it's such a massive drain on your energy that it wouldn't be worth it.
