Want to get a dire pet?
OMG it's so EASY. I tested this last night and got a level 19 dire flamingo this morning ROFLMAO!
The pet you want needs to be in an area where you can take only heroes to clear out the place of any patrolling mobs that might hinder your ability to be able to stay in the area of the desired pet for a few hours. Also you need to be away from anyone who will heal you.
I gave Dunkoro a self heal and a hard rez (NOT rebirth) as his only active skills. Also take the wand/staff out of his hand.
Set your Beastmaster and Expertise skills to the max and take Charm Animal and any very wimpy weapon in your pack. If your expertise is not high enough, you won't have enough energy with a 60% DP to pull this off, as Comfort Animal calls for 10 energy and you will only have 8 @ 60% DP.
After clearing the area of what/whoever could hinder your effort, set your heroes to peace, take their weapons off, and set their flags. (I left Dunkoro in guard, but he had no weapon and all his skills were disabled except Troll unguent and rez.)
Get naked, put on the wimpy weapon, hit the object of your desire ONCE, and take off the weapon. Now let it kill you. It will take a while because the animal is probably level 3 to 5. When you die, it will run to Dunkoro who is now busy rezzing you. After he does, the animal will run back to you and lather rinse repeat.
Go eat. Go to bed. Go to a movie. Leave to game up and running and when you get back: Tada! You have a nice HIGH LEVEL animal that looks just like it did, but it has a secret. Once you tame it, type /namepet if you don't see it. When you do, it will show you that it is dire.
I am now probably the only one who has a dire Flamingo but hey, it's a conversation piece that bites!
Anyway, if you want a dire pet, it's pretty easy right now to get it. I will someday probably trade it for a Phoenix. But for now, it's fun to have the pink bird.

Re: Want to get a dire pet?
I think I will have to try this with my Ranger. What is the difference between normal and Dire?

Re: Want to get a dire pet?
I did this out of the Sunspear Hall for a Dire Pig on my Ranger. It does take a while, but once the soon-to-be pet hits level 15 you can charm it and raise it to level 20 as your own. I used Dunkoro to rez me back up each time. Everyone else was well out of the way.
The only issue, and this was a small one, was my Ranger had very few deaths prior to doing this. His death count REALLY jumped after obtaining the dire pet.
Even with all this effort though, I would love to do the Spider run sometime. The Dire Pig is nice, but the Spider looks better in the HoM. Of course, maybe I should do get the Spider on one of my other characters that is not Ranger Primary just to have it.
