Caster Hater Nec/Mes

I'm testing this build in my quest to be able to either shut down two casters at once, or take one out entirely on my own. t's designed primarily for arena, but it may be usefull elsewhere.

By using careful timing of Soul Leech, Backfire and, on monks, Mark of Subversion, I can either keep them from casting for almost 30 seconds, or let them cast themselves into oblivion. Power Spike and Energy Burn are in there for a little diversity of damage that is still geared towards my targets. Illusion of Weakness and Distortion are there to help keep me alive.

In my next round of testing I plan on swapping swapping Power Spike and Energy Burn for Conjure Phantasm and Phantom Pain to better deal with non-casters as well.

Class: Necromancer / Mesmer

Assumed items:
   +2 to Blood Magic

Attributes: (cost)
   Soul Reaping: 0 (0)
   Blood Magic: 10+2 (61)
   Domination Magic: 11 (77)
   Illusion Magic: 10 (61)

   Total attribute points used: 199/200

Skills:
1) Soul Leech (elite) - (10,2,15) For 10 seconds, whenever target foe casts a spell you steal 67 health from that foe. This is an elite skill.

2) Mark of Subversion - (10,2,30) For 9 seconds, the next time target foe casts a spell that targets an ally, the spell fails and you steal 76 health from that foe.

3) Backfire - (15,3,20) For 10 seconds, whenever target foe casts a spell, that foe takes 112 damage.

4) Energy Burn - (10,2,20) Target foe loses 9 energy and takes 8 damage for each point of energy lost.

5) Power Spike - (10,1,15) If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and target foe takes 81 damage.

6) Illusion of Weakness - (10,2,30) You lose 177 health. Illusion of Weakness ends if damage drops your health below 25% of your maximum. When Illusion of Weakness ends, you gain 177 health.

7) Distortion - (5,0,5) For 5 seconds, you have a 75% chance to evade attacks. Whenever you evade an attack this way, you lose 1 energy or Distortion ends.

8) Rez Signet

Hi Dan,

That's a good build you've got there, and very similar idea to a shutdown Me/N build that I often run in tombs. I may try to work that into my next tombs group!

I went the route of completely shutting down and killing 1 caster with my Me/N. That means I can't shut down a second one, so we typically run 2 or 3 of these at a time in tombs or GvG to lock down all the enemy monks:

Attributes:
- 16 domination
- 10 fast cast
- split the rest between death magic and inspiration

Skills:
-energy surge [E]
-energy burn
-mind wrack
-shame
-signet of humility
-energy tap
-control corpse
-res sig

The basic idea is to completely deny them of any energy, and slowly kill them at the same time with surge and mindwrack. Basically just use the skills in order, then keep mind wrack on them and use your other skills as the recharge. Corpse control is there both to restore your own energy and to deny corpses to the enemy necros. I haven't met a monk yet that could get a spell off after 5 seconds of this.

Another variant that we'll run in conjunction with this is a Me/Mo or two with a fast-cast restore life and drain enchant instead of corpse control.

Obviously it's hard to survive with this build, so its no good for comp arenas. But, a good life barrier (or bonder) monk can do wonders in an 8-man team.

And by the way, if your goal is to shut down 2 casters, I'd suggest looking into the use of Migraine with a cover hex plus some good interrupts. I haven't perfected a build for that myself, but I'll let you know if I ever do! I suppose I'll put that in the Mesmer section of the forums though!

I have a similar build that I run in randoms all the time, and it works great.

Not sure how well it would work in other forms of PvP. Would probably have to be modified somewhat to be successful.

Anyway, here it is:

Necromancer / Mesmer

Assumed items:
   +1 to Soul Reaping
   +4 to Blood Magic

Attributes: (cost)
   Soul Reaping: 8+1 (37)
   Blood Magic: 12+4 (97)
   Domination Magic: 10 (61)

Skills:
1) Soul Leech (elite) - (10,2,15) For 10 seconds, whenever target foe casts a spell you steal 84 health from that foe. This is an elite skill.
2) Backfire - (15,3,20) For 10 seconds, whenever target foe casts a spell, that foe takes 105 damage.
3) Life Siphon - (10,2,2) For 25 seconds, target suffers health degeneration of 3 and you gain health regeneration of 3.
4) Vampiric Gaze - (10,1,5) Steal 63 health from target foe.
5) Barbed Signet - (0,2,30) Sacrifice 8% max health. You steal 63 health from target foe.
6) Empathy - (10,2,10) For 16 seconds, whenever target foe attacks, that foe takes 23 damage.
7) Hex Breaker - (5,0,5) For 140 seconds, the next time you are the target of a hex, that hex fails and the caster takes 34 damage.
8 ) rez sig

I use soul leech and backfire for casters, empathy for rangers and warriors.
Then spread life siphon as much as possible, supplementing gaze whenever needed. Barbed sig is for whenever you're low on energy and need something to do emoticon, plus it's a minor heal.
I've had success with this vs teams of warriors and rangers as much as against caster teams.

Another modification that can be made is to replace barbed sig with awaken the blood. That coupled with a 20% +1 blood item, and you have a 1 in 5 chance of casting a 4 pip life siphon. Not to mention all your blood skills will do more damage.

I'm considering a variant of one of these builds for addition to the GvG team.

Does anyone have any input for Factions or NF skills that would compliment the role?

The goal of the build would be to apply eavy pressure through degen hexes, while still interfering with opposition monking.

The build must be somewhat self- sufficient, and energy management is a must for long encounters.

The only problem I've had with a lot of the shutdown skills while playing a necro prime is the slow cast times.
I've found that a necro prime screams "interrupt me!" to an interrupter almost as much as an ele does.

For the degen part, I'd like to try the combo of Reaper's Mark, Life Siphon and Parasitic Bond.
That's -9 degen for quite a long time.

Not sure what to put in the rest of the build though.
