Re: League of Legends
The original DotA was just a custom map/mod for Warcraft 3. But it was a really elaborate one, and continued to grow over time with it's popularity.
Basically it's a team based RTS. You only control one character, but that character levels during the course of a battle. You decide how to develop (where to put your skill points) as the battle progresses. Plus you can buy items with the gold you make during a battle.
But with DotA, all this character progression and item purchases were only contained within the battle. Every new battle was a clean slate.
It seems that LoL has taken this one step further with character progression of your account (i.e. the summoner).
So it sounds a little more elaborate in that you're customizing/prepping before each battle instead of just picking a hero to play.
It's pretty addictive.
I think it would be a real blast if we had teams of guildies playing against each other.

Re: League of Legends
BTW, don't bother messing with the european download that I posted earlier.
I tried it, but couldn't get logged in (I guess it could tell I was coming from the US)
I'm not sure if the beta invite that I got was from the email in Gard's initial post, or from the application i submitted on their web site.
But either way, the US one works.
