Identify Item and Unlocking Runes
If you find any Salvaged Materials (Garbs and Armors) that need to be Identified, that means they have a Rune inside them. When you ID the Item, it will unlock the Rune for PVP Characters. Be sure to only use an Expert Salvage kit, which you can first get access to in Yak's Bend for 400 gold, to Salvage this item. Otherwise you will most likely, if not always, lose the Rune. Even with the Expert Kit you will sometimes lose the Rune, at least that was my Experience in the BWE.
Unidentified Weapons do not carry any Runes or unlock anything to my knowledge, but it still may be worth IDing them before Salvage since a portion of them will be "Precious" and sell for several times their worth. I wouldn't worry about IDing these until you have the cash to afford it later in the game or so, I didn't start till around level 10.
Important thing is never salvage "Salvagable Material" like Garbs and Armors that need to be Identified. Also if you are 100% sure you will never play PVP, you can ask someone in the Guild that does to ID the item for you. That way they get the Rune Unlocked, and you get a Free ID.

On the subject of identifying unidentified weapons...
If the weapon has a modifier (bonus to damage, energy, casting speed etc...) does IDing the weapon effect your chances of getting the upgrade item from the weapon?

I haven't ever got a Rune out of Weapons, just Salvagable Items like Armors and Garbs. Also I got a purple/indigo salvagable armor and Expert Salvaged it, but didn't get anything, so I think only salvagable armors that need to be ID'd have runes, someone correct me if they find differently.
EDIT: You get hilts and Pommels and Strings, and all those weapon modifiers out of Weapons that show they have + to something. I am sure this is all written up at Guru or Gwonline, and probably has been for some time, I just wasn't even thinking about it. Too busy having fun playing ;P

You can get upgrade items from weapons. So far I have got a bow grip that adds 1 to marksmanship and I have an axe grip that adds something I forget right now. You can get bow strings hilts and other upgrades like that.

Have any of you come across any magic weapons that you can't salvage? I found an axe with a shaft of fortitude that gives +25 to health. Unfortunately the base damage on the axe is only 2-7 or something like that. So, I'd like to try to use an expert salvage kit on it...but I get the message "cannot salvage this item" or something like that.

Yes I have an axe just like that but higher damage that will not let me salvage.

Only times I have seen that:
Win weapon through Quest
Bought weapon at Store
Traded for weapon at Collector
Inventory is Full
Recently fought
The first 3 can't be salvaged, but usually sold to Merchant for more than usual. The last happens right after a battle, can't ID or salvage stuff or a couple seconds.

Hmm,
may be a bug then. They probably changed the item number on that axe during one of the updates and it still has the old number that is no longer seen as an axe at all. I know I got plenty of old runes that the Rune trader won't touch, probably same thing only with salvageable items. Along the lines of old items that got changed and no longer stack within inventory.

15 June update from www.guildwars.com
Improved salvage kits so that they always successfully salvage runes from monster-dropped armor. There is still a chance of destroying a rune when using a salvage kit to try to retrieve it from your own armor.

This is on a weapon trying to get a weapon upgrade not armor getting a rune.
Unfortunately you can still destroy weapon upgrades the problem is I can't get this upgrade at all because I can't salvage the weapon at all. Also if you upgrade your pre-order weapon you can not salvage those to get the parts back either. Its treating this axe, that I got from a monster drop, like its a Pre-order weapon. Do any collectors and or quest rewards give weapons with upgrade items?
