Meeting John Sykes?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if you've met John and what the likelihood of meeting with him is? As some of you know I have to 'be' John in Snakebite and it would be great to meet up and thank him in person when Lizzy hit Folkestone.

Is it possible to make a request through his management? Or is he a bit moody like Gary Moore?

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete

I have never met JS and have no real desire to. I admire him incredibly as a musician - he is my all-time favourite guitarist and I cannot see that ever changing.

I have been lucky enough to learn a lot about JS the man from close associates of his and, while I have learned that he can be a sweetheart, he can also be a real pain and primadonna.

We all have our faults, however, I would just like to keep my faith in him as a musician untainted by any potentially disappointing meeting.

But good luck to you in trying to meet JS. You are doing a great job in popularizing his music and deserve all the recognition you get.

Cheer
Simon

Hi Pete,

What Simon says is true, John has had a lot of bad press, and has been portrayed as a bit of a knob at times, but i have met him on numerous occasions, and he has always been a really nice genuine guy. The best thing to do is just hang round near the tour bus after the show for the band to come out, they are all always happy to chat and sign stuff/take pictures etc. Hope when you do meet him he's had a good gig and he's in the mood. Like i said, i've never had a problem chatting to him etc but i have heard from a few people that he can be a bit moody at times, (but hey, can't we all, lol!)

Cheers Guys,

And thanks for the support Simon.

I'll hang round the bus like a groupie, but I doubt he'll be keen on standing round chatting whilst getting to his bus in Folkestone in the middle of December with a froce 10 SW gale battering his golden locks! We could always retire to my favourite kebab house round the corner!

Forget the management Pete. The bus is indeed your best bet. John can be a prima donna but he can also be totally charming and is generally happy to meet fans and sign stuff.

The rest of the band are very friendly, especially Marco, who is always happy to talk to fans.

John was very obliging :naughty:  in sub- zero January temperatures a few years back so I'm sure he'd be more than willing to chat to you. Good luck!

I met him after the gig May 30th they did in Athens. He was very nice to all of the fans who were waiting to take pictures with him. There was a guy behind me who had brought all his vinyl collection to be signed and I thought like John will get crazy seeing this. But he signed them all very gladly and didn't say a thing. The only thing he refused was when someone turned the lights on him and tried to film him. He asked him not doing that and the guy stopped it right away. Some other friends of me went to the hotel and had a great chat with all the band.

Whoa,

I finally got to meet John last wednesday in Folkestone. I meant a freezing cold wait, but had a great and very long chat with bassist Francesco Dicosmo - a truely nice guy, whilst I waited.

John was very friendly indeed and chatted to us about our Whitesnake tribute band Snakebite - he'd even heard of us and thought it was great! Praise indeed!. throughout he gripped his guitar case. I'm certain nobody get's to touch his Les Paul at all! Nick, from Snakebite, was a little miffed that John wouldn't sign his Sykes signature Les Paul on that grounds that 'They get sold on eBay', but hey ho!

There's a pic below. Sossy to link elsewhere Simon, but my PC's on the blink - hope you don't mind.

Also got to meet Scott - a true 'elder statesman of rock!' his playing is way better these days.

John's playing was exactly as I'd expected - squeling false harmonics everywhere and bucket loads of soulful melody. Perfect!

Good for you Pete - glad you got to meet the guys and it was a positive experience.

John's very wary of being ripped off by people - to a fault. But after being shafted by David Coverdale over the Whitesnake album, I don't blame him. I think most people would hold a grudge if they were diddled over something so brilliant they had contributed a lion's share to.

Really glad that you enjoyed the gig and got to meet John,Pete!

Simon, you know what I think about the whole 1987 issue and DC's inexcusable behaviour towards John so I understand that JS is wary after being so badly ripped off; however,it could be argued that John was being more than a little precious by not signing Nick's guitar.

Afraid it's all wearing a bit thin. Grudge bearing (on both John and DC's part)20 years on seems such a waste of time.If the DC experience is indeed still making JS so cynical,it's a great shame that such a big fan had to lose out because of it.

I wasn't trying to say that JS's opinion about Coverdale was the reason JS didn't sign Pete's guitar. That was poorly expressed by me. But it does perhaps help to explain if JS is suspicious of people's motives.

There are other reasons for JS not signing the guitar (right or wrong) - for one thing he's been ripped off by so-called 'fans' when he's done that in the past. But yes, it is a shame that a true fan lost out. I wonder how much JS really knew about Snakebite? If he had he'd know how passionate Pete is about that music (and I base that just on his posts on this forum and Doug Aldrich's board). That should have been enough to tell him that he wouldn't have been ripped off this time round.
