One for the guitarists - John's Technique

John has an interesting 'trick' I've always been keen to add to my own bag of tricks.

He performed this several times at the Thin Lizzy gig at Newcastle last week and it's most notable appearance on record is at the begginging of 'Cautionary Warning'. I've also heard Zakk Wylde and Iron Maiden's Janick Gers perform a similar trick.

Here's a youtube clip - John Performs this at 02.09. If anyone can explain what he does in detail, that would be great. emoticon

I'm not quite sure how John does it i can't do it myself (although occasionnaly it happens by accident, lol!) But i know Zakk does it using a ring on his picking hand he sort of bounces it up an down on the treble strings. As for Janick, i guess he does it in the same way, he wears a ring on that hand aswell!

Apologies Alex, here it is (02.09) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBonRmL70Lg

Thanks Scotty, I'm rehearsing with my band tonight so I'll give it a go!

As for the two other guitarists I mentioned, Zakk does it on the solo from 'I don't want to change the world' on the Live and Loud album, and Janick at the Beginning of the 'Holy Smoke' solo on No Prayer for the Dying.

Hi

I will try and run ethrough this technique for you which can sound very cool.

As far as I know this was developed by VAN HALEN and GARY MOORE. If you listen to GARY MOORE album CORRIDORS OF POWER (END OF THE WORLD ) he plays it quite a bit.

There are a number of different ways of doing it but one to start off with is as follows:

Guitar with heavy distortion then you can start off on the OPEN A STRING 2ND FRET.

USE YOUR MIDDLE FINGER OR FIRST FINGER DEPENDS ON YOUR STRENGTH AS YOU WILL NEED TO HAMMER ON AND OFF THE OPEN A STRING 2ND FRET.

THEN IF YOU WHILST DOING THIS WITH THE LEFT FRETTING HAND -WITH THE RIGHT HAND EITHER USE YOUR PINKY FINGER OR THE EDGE OF YOUR RIGHT HAND VERY LIGHTLY WHILST BARELY TOUCHING THE 2 STRING YOU ARE HAMMERING RUN THE RIGHT HAND SLOWLY UP TOWARDS THE NUT.

You dont have to take the right hand all the way up the neck but for starters you will get the idea . This is really playing the harmonics but with a loud amp and lots of control and distortion it can sound great.

Some players use a ring or even a metal pick rather than the flesh or pinky of the right hand for different effects.

Once you mastered this you can try hammering on between the 4th and 2nd on different strings.

I am sure that along with some other riffs/ runs John was heavily influended by GARY MOORE.

I would love to know why they have fallen out if that is the case as GM even came down to the studios when the TOPT were recording the 2nd album and apparently gave John some ideas.

Anyway, have fun I hope I have explained the technique.

Cheers

Having seen both Gary and John this year, it must be said that whilst I totally respect Gary's amazing work over the years, especially his rock/ metal stuff, he doesn't hold a candle to John when it comes to live playing (or singing) in 2007.

It's clear in John's playing that Gary was a big influence, but John's taken it to another level.

Or to put it another way and to paraphrase Darth Vader "You're powers are weak old man...now I am the master!"

As I'm unlikely to ever meet Gary Moore, and given his less than warm reputation, I don't mind saying the above!

Hi
Same here enjoyed both this year too! I agree John is a fantastic player as is Gary both are superb in their own fields /styles they now play.I just wish John would do something more with BLUE MURDER and GARY would do something in the G FORCE vein as that album/era is massively underated.

Cheers

Top Notch! Tried what you suggested at our gig last night and it worked. It wasn't as clean as precise as when JS does it (hey, first time!) but it resembled it. Our drummer thought it was pretty cool! Thanks a bunch!

Hi

No problem it is a great technique . JS has been doing it for years so it will take time to build the same strength and speed but you can use it on different strings and different frets and it does sound great.

Cheers
