Re: Washing w/ Baking Soda

I do a baking soda/acv thing once a week or so. Or whenever I remember to, which has lately been like once a month.. I do hope you are using a shampoo that already doesn't leave **** in your hair though! I do it just as a sort of deep clean thing.

yea i use an organic type shampoo that has tea tree in it. however, it doesn't seem all that organic since it has sms in it and all. But it still gets the job done quite well for the moment.

So I decided maybe it's time to type up a new Sig, and it's like, "What am I gonna talk about?" Yeah, that was pointless! :-P

Re: Washing w/ Baking Soda

Ive done this and it's amazing:

"wanna get all of the oil, gunk, wax, and other thing out of your dreads that may have possibly built up from not enough care? this concoction below has been said by tons of people i know, and soooo many others online, to work better than any kind of commercial dreadlock shampoo or rinse! So here we go:

This works sooo good~ and most of you probably have all the stuff available right now so try it out !~
----------
(Read all of this before trying it out!)
-----------

Get a BIG bowl of warm water, mix in about 3/4 cup of baking soda, 8-9 drops of tea tree oil, 2 Tsp of lemon juice, and 2Tsp of salt, and stir until well dissolved. use a squirt bottle or something to apply to your scalp and soak all your dreads real well ~ wrap up in a towel, shower, cap, or plastic baggie, and let them sit for like 1/2 an hour or so ~ then rinse( and rinse again ). When you rinse your hair the water will probably be muddy brown...getting all dirt/smoke/gunk out....and it deep cleans the middle of the dread! I'd do this about maybe once a month or so....its really worth it! It will leave you just a pure head of dreads and nothing else inside, and helps them knot up faster and stay knotted, with no grease! But you still should shampoo often, even if you do this treatment.

*also*, the "ACV" treatment works just as well or better:
go to the food store and buy some Apple Cider Vinegar. It neutralizes the alkali build-up on the scalp and roots, helps loosen the flakey gunk in your hair, and makes the itchies go away. It also makes the dreads much smoother and softer. Apply it to your hair with cotton balls or some kind of dropper. Also, it's nice to add a sprig of rosemary to the vinegar, too, and let it sit. Rosemary is wonderful for the hair and scalp. It encourages growth and strengthens the hair follicles. i'd leave it in about 30 minutes. it may feel a little tingly or burny- but that's a good thing. if it becomes unbearable then rinse it after 20 minutes.

if your hair is dry, you can dilute the apple cider with water, (1:1 ratio) and use it as a spritz instead. This won't remove any build up. but it will still neutralize and stop the itchies. The vinegar won't smell much after it dries.

****be sure to not get any of these concoctions into your eyes! maybe have a friend help, and close your eyes and cover them with a washcloth since the vinegar is strong and may make your eyes water**** also, you may need to rinse a few times until the water you squeeze out of the dreads is totally clean, and so that they don't smell like vinegar. older dreads may have more buildup and may require a few ACV rinses, or treatments more often.

Let me know if you get the same results!"

From the same source (The method I did)

"After using this several times now, here's my thoughts again...I use about a gallon of water and put alll the ingredients in and mix into a big bowl. I've now gotten to where I don't get any more nasty brown stuff when I soak them. What I did start doing differently is this...I soak my dreads in the big bowl...upside down, scalp and all...and I pour the mix through them a couple times so that it runs through the dread...I put them up in a towel and let the mix on for about half an hour...then I take that big bowl, empty it, clean it, and mix up about 2/3 cup of vinegar in another gallon of water, then do the upside down soak thing in this mix. There is a mild chemical reaction that occurs with the vinegar and baking soda, so there's a bit of bubbling that comes from your dreads, but it feels good, and I think it really deep cleans to the center of my 2-3 inch thick locks. When Im done, I rinse VERY thoroughly in the shower and dry as normal. Since I've started these treatments, my locks have gone from sort of stiff, heavy, and slightly musty smelling despite regular washing, to soft, flexible, light and clean smelling, plus they are locking up tighter and more evenly...I can't say thank you enough to whoever came up with this..."

sea salt in general has that red residue junk, I've used bath salts in the tub that have sea salt in it, and every time the water is drained, that red stuff is left behind, so.

it might be with just Sea Salt. I don't know really, but every time sea salt was involved with something in the shower, this red stuff would be left behind after the water was drained.

today when i washed my hair i tried adding a little baking soda to my shampoo. it really did help. i could easily tell the difference in my hair texture. feels to be a bit cleaner and my hair seems to be a little 'fuller' now. the best things in life are (practically) free.

Re: Washing w/ Baking Soda

doesn't do it for me I have to say I never trusted it in my hair or anything . I just know its too close to resemble dandr just by the look of the stuff.

only practical usage I can think of is keeping it in the mini fridge for controlling the smell.

I could see why I might use it only if I ever really had to for whatever reason. Not on a regular basis by any means. only if I got fish guts in my hair or something drastic like that! actually now that I think of it there's no way...

I'm set with my shampoo bar and hair rinse. I like the herbal stuff thats my prerogative. sometimes the worst things are also free... so Idk
I would discourage anything like using baking soda combined with other stuff you gotta keep things natural. right isn't it called sodium bicarbonate and SLS is sodium lauryl sulfate or something? thats too close a resemblance.

to each his own i guess and hey if it works it works so I really don't know... baking soda ? really
