Re: Aloe vera information.

Heya Dehleet! We've missed ya! How the heck are you? emoticon

If the plant is firm and thin, it is dehydrated, especially if the tips are turning brown. A healthy aloe plant will be plump and firm, but pillowy when gently squeezing the spikes. The new growth will be very soft, however, till it grows thick and strong. You should keep your aloe plant warm in the winter ...aloes are like 90+ % water, so they will freeze up easily.

Aloes go dormant in the winter, too, so you shouldn't water them too much. During the summer, you should water it well, but be sure it has drainage...sandy soil or a bit of gravel beneath the soil layer works well. Only water again when the soil is absolutely dry or if the spikes look as though they are losing their "plumpness".

If the plant is browning, it is receiving too much sunlight. Indoor aloes like shaded spots, but if they are planted outdoors, the plant should be in a sunny spot.

 :)

Re: Aloe vera information.

Awesome thread..

I grew up with aloe vera plants. My mom is firm believer in its healing properties. As a kid I always remember my mom saying one of two things:

- if you get a cut, a burn, a scrape, a rash, or a bug bite... you should either put some aloe on it or let a dog lick it (as gross as this sounds, dogs have certain healing agents in their saliva that speed up the scabbing and healing process)

Aloe vera is awesome. I have a huge plant that I just bought for about 8 dollars at a grocery store. What I usually do is take a small piece of the leaf, cut it open, and then cover my face with it, led it dry, and then rinse it off... I swear its like a day at the spa... my skin feels so smooth and it practically glows. I love it.

Re: Aloe vera information.

Hi, i've had 5-6 baby aloes for 4 years in a beer glass in my bathroom. I was meant to put them in pots but never did. It's been filled up with water and they've got really long roots (almost like dreads) but they haven't grown....at all. Is this 'cos they need soil or have they died and the waters just keeping them fresh? Also there isn't much sun there is this the reason? thanks :jointie:

Aloes don't really need lots of water. Their roots are usually short. I'd place your aloes in a shallow pot that is easily drainable. If there is no drainage, the roots will root.

You can also place sand at the bottom with a layer of soil and sand mixture at the top...aloes like that.

as far as I know aloe vera is pretty much the only plant with the qualities that it has. If other aloe plants were like that we would have known about it now I think.

it's called a miracle plant. it's a type of cactus. I had a larger aloe plant that I took cuttings and planted them in a separate pot. Cool how they can grow like that with out seed. however the roots or sorry not the roots but the pups shooting out from the center are very dry and discolored . maybe I didn't care enough for it after transplanting its healthy now so it is really very low maintenance to grow ...
