A doubt that a new dark age would have befallen civilization. Let us take the German example after WWI. Should the USSR or USA not have intervened. The same conditions were present that spawned a nation to look at any and all hopes for salvation. So I add to the list despotism.
on sub-modern tribalism, perhaps another thread can discuss the impact of global culture and the quest for modern ethnic identity as it impacts national allegiance/culture.
i agree. but i don't think its accurate to use WWI vs. WWII scenarios because they were two distinct wars fought in two different eras. WWI was fought and had ended before the league of nations had been conceptualized or let alone implemented. the LoN established global laws and standards, monetary systems and policy, doctrines and rules etc. my point is that from the early 1900's, immediately fallowing WWI, to the mid 1900's, fallowing WWII, the nation-state had become increasingly globalized and irreversibly interoperable and interdependent on one another. fallowing WWII all nation-states had to be aligned with a super power for their own survival, be it the U.S.S.R. or the U.S.A. with respects to global order and its sustainability, the super power(s) were, and still are, indispensable.
There are many possibilities to discuss why the USA has come to serve the role it does.
However, back to the original idea of Team America World Police. This is the role the USA plays to assert American hegemony and sovereignty. America would not be the beneficent, democratic and equalateral world government - as in all nations are reckognized - since American foreign policy follows the model of empire. Through the use of latent power and that threat of violence Team America World Police enforces unilateral policies to ensure global hegemony... just like the police in my neighborhood. No voice, no repeal, no choice but accept it... heh

possibly. but china has many indigenous problems within their own borders (Tibet, Taiwan, poverty, energy, population etc.) are a few examples. the majority of the Chinese people still live on less then one dollar a day. per capita, China is at least 50 years behind the OECD. setting aside the fact that the u.s military is still the worlds preeminent power and is projected to remain the worlds dominant force for the next 30 to 40 years, and NATO, though some can question its integrity and resolve, remains the strongest alliance in human history.
U.S influence and national power might be receding, but its not declining. the pentagons budget grew in 2009, upwards of one-trillion. any state actor that could challenge or possibly threaten u.s dominance would be contained or dissuaded (USSR) deterred (china) or eliminated (iraq. possibly iran) the u.s military's qualitative and quantitative advantage is overwhelming.
