The way i've reached that state of mind is by observing my thoughts in my mind. Any thought at all. even the thought of observing my own thoughts. And by stepping back (so to say) and looking at my thought as exactly what it is, a thought, I eventually clear my mind.

If thats what you've experienced or not I don't know. But its something I like to do when I feel I need to be more aware of whats around me. I find it much easier to observe things when I'm not attaching an emotion or explanation to what I'm seeing.
